I have another question, why is it that some providers will have half a dozen or more locations in the USA but not a single one anywhere in Canada? Is it more difficult or expensive to run a site in Canada, or are there regulatory hurdles that don't exist in the United States?
Too bad you can't put servers in this building, you could cover both countries!
I got three giveaways in the first thread, where #racknerdgang was started. Gave them all away to others who probably needed it more than me.
Thats when it a started.
I Bought a service in AMS. Dustinc was kind enough to make it a frankenstein with one ryzen giveaway and now it has 3 vcores, 3.5gb RAM, 95 gb disk.
And it runs like a blast. Im keeping it for the lifetime, ☺️
Possibly, is that a service that is offered?
Lucky you. @dustinc is so helpful. He changed the location of my giweaway vps on request.
My AMS one is 2core, 2.5GB VPS. Not ryzen. I am thinking of keeping it. But waiting for a sweet flash sale, list someone posted few pages back 4core, 4 GB something at 18.99 per annum. Hell of a deal that was..
I think you need to set that yourself. Check the following video once, if this is what you are expecting.

You run websites on that VPS? Is there a big difference in performance between these E5s and Ryzon? Never used a ryzen...
Nope. I dont run any wesites on it. I got one ryzen on giveaway and asked it to be merged to existing plan. So i dont have any ryzen cores. It generally idles, sometimes i RDP into it for kicks. Or rsync stuff.
For hosting websites, i have a shared hosting plan 100GB for 10$ a year with racknerd. Use it for running managed mail services/park my domains.
I wasn't asking how to set up a ssh tunnel, I already know how to do that. What I was asking was does anyone offer a service where you can ssh in to what is essentially a server version of Linux, probably running on a virtual machine on some server, and if so what is that called? If I am the root administrator for that server then I can make certain the ssh settings are correct. If not, and I'm only a mere user with no administrator privileges, then I need to be certain that ssh forwarding isn't disabled. I don't need a desktop environment and I don't need a lot of memory or storage, I just would like the ability to ssh into a server and then go out from there, probably using a SOCKS5 proxy or something similar. Is there a specific name for that type of service?
Ha ha.. powerful idling VPS.. sounds familiar. 😎
I don't clearly understand what you are saying... correct me if I am wrong.
You want to connect to a VPS through ssh from you computer... and then you want to connect to the world, using your VPS network, instead of your local network. Right?
Substitute "Linux server" for "VPS" and you are absolutely correct. Now maybe "VPS" is also correct, but I honestly have never been quite certain what a VPS is. If VPS is synonymous with a Linux server then yes. But for all I know VPS implies a Windows server or something else, and I don't want that.
Yes.. VPS or virtual private server.. is just a virtual machine in the cloud. You can install Linux in that.. and connect it through SSH.
For example, you can purchase a simple VPS with 512MB RAM, 1 core.. from Racknerd. Then you will get login details of that virtual machine, along with a IPv4 address.
You are administrator to that machine. You can boot, reboot or reinstall another flavor of linux in that machine. And you can connect to it through SSH.
Very cool! Racknerd has considerate customer service.
Thanks, that clarifies it for me. Much appreciated.
Yup, they are very helpful. They will guide you if you need any help. Check these VPS plans.

You're most welcome... 😎
I've had success opening a ticket and asking for my giveaway vpses to be transferred to another location. If you don't have any data you need migrated, it's quite easy for them to do.
Yes. I have never heard it from their team that there is no stock in the desired location. They almost always migrate you.
I had bought one of their services in east coast, speeds to my country were terrible, but as soon as AMS was launched, dustin was kind enough to help me migrate to AMS(even when the costs are much higher there) for the same price and i was probably the first guy to get their services migrated to AMS
And even dustin is very accomodative. I wonder how he takes out time to connect with each one individually and honour their requests. I am sure he has a soft spot for LET members.
Its not particularly idle for the most time :-P what do you use your server for?
P.S i also use my shared hosting as a strictly personal nextcloud instance for storage, uptil now, it has no issues.
So @dustinc the thread's reaching 1 million views soon.
Does the friendly resident DJ get anything from the giveaway gifts mentioned by the community 😝
Maybe the house?

Shed will also do x-D
I use my VPS for websites. I set up a nginx server with, php and mysql. And host the websites I develop. Low traffic ones , though.
