240Hz monitors? You play a lot of FPS games @dustinc ?

The only game I play (for now that is) Warzone -- and the graphics, FPS are pretty good with these builds. I had https://sensequality.com/ work his optimization magic.

Holy shit, I do not charge enough for what I do.

Get in on it! Tons of opportunity.

I love optimization and I sometimes even do it for free. I can get a Core 2 Quad and a Radeon 4000 series on an Intel mobo built in '06 playing games from 2016 and made an R6300v2 Netgear that is probably 10 years old now outperform a new Nighthawk so damn well my buddy returned it for the few hundred he spent on it.

I mean, spec wise? No I can't beat spendy hardware, but I can do some interesting things with what others consider to be useless.

Its just a challenge I enjoy taking on.

We can do wonders when our budget is very tight, right... 😜

Exactly. When money is tight, we do what we can with what we have.

I like breathing new life into old gear, but yeah it was born from necessity originally lol

Me too.. I like tinkering the with old hardware as well. I love flashing new firmware from xda in my old mobiles.

Recently started tinkering with routers too.. Flashed openwrt in my Nighthawk 7500 .. So far good..

    I like flashing too...

    ....new roms, you dirty mind!

    When did you started flashing?

A little earlier than you. Motorola defy red lens was my second phone... Waterproof, great battery life, indestructable build quality...

First was samsung galaxy ace... I did all sorts of experiments upon it ..

Galaxy ace have ROMs too? 😲

Ha ha that waterproof thing. The best in the phone. I used to clean my phone at tap, and my friends got panic.. My best phone ever. And that red lens green lens discussion on xda... I flashed the wrong rom what to do questions... 😝

very nice rigs, if looking for its week point I would say that these Crucial P5 NVME drives (only Gen3) in Office PC are the bottleneck (in heavy disk usage scenarios)

    current Gen4 drives could offer you double peek transfers (3.5M -> 7M) and IOPS (500k -> 1M)

so if you would like to find the reason to upgrade something, and rid off old one here... then you know the drill... :D

btw. AMD is about to announce their CPU updates (3D L3 cache giving another 15% performance) at January 4 at CES

I love it @Andrews -- slick slick slick!

K20 is good device. I used Poco F1 before getting this G8X. F1 is such a wonderful developer friendly device. Flashed lots of ROMs intlo. No worry about bricking. These phones are real flagship killers.

    PSU: EVGA Supernova 1600W, 220-GP-1600-X1

This is so much overkill here, you're going going to be at such a low load most of the time and that means being in one of the least-efficient ranges. I don't see anything that would come close to needing 1600w here, did you just have this laying around or have a particular reason for wanting that much power? If we're just wishlisting I would've gone with a 1000w, probably a titanium rated one.

Hi @bakageta -- great catch! I can be a bit unique when it comes to overkill πŸ˜‚ A lot of the build is overkill for what I'm doing, including the RAM. I could get away with 32GB and be more than fine. I did tone down the build on the home PC, including the PSU but even then the build is overkill.

The only reason why I went with the 5950X at home was because the 5900X were out of stock with my vendor and there was no particular ETA. The hardware market has been crazy. I most recently bought my brother his gaming PC and just to get everything for the build was ~ 1 month which is insane, but it's the reality of the market today.

More monitors! (I'd change these to be mine!)

On another note, what do you think of Windows 11?

These monitors are nice, can't say I have any complaints about either Windows 11 or the monitors.

Both run smooth. I am a huge Apple fan too -- but enjoying every moment with these builds πŸ˜‚

So your mac is also a potential giveaway candidate?

    Amen!

Oh my goodness, are you in sales by chance? I feel like you'd be a closer.

I wish i was. But not good as you... Not even close... But i'm learning from the best... The great @dustinc...

Let's go! I do enjoy sales, It's treated me well in my career - most people believe sales is a bad gig, but they're already salespeople themselves :)

I think a ryzen flash sale is in order now. like a dope ass sale

You ever need any help doing custom FW on Netgears (or others) hit me up, I have done so much work with 'em and have just tons of data saved on this. I hit up random people on Reddit and fix their "bricked" routers for free just because I've put so much work in myself and would rather not see them go in the trash.

This is the definition of a good guy! Love seeing this man, especially within this community. We need more people like you. Helping and giving are awesome things to do.

That's awesome man - always respect people who have that gift, one thing that I love seeing is when people create awesome projects out of raspberry pi.

When I got my first Raspberry Pi I was in heaven, but at the same time it took away the challenge of making a device do something it was never meant to do.

They are super fun and useful, I've got a 3B+, a 4 w/ 4GB RAM, and also a lesser known Banana Pi R2 that I built into a custom 4G LTE router using a Sierra Wireless mPCI card, was quite useful when I lived out in the boonies where 1.5mbit DSL w/ 300ms ping was the best you could get.

The 4G ripped 40mbit up and down and 40ms ping, what an upgrade.

    Excellent maker devices.

Awesome! I feel like if you're up for it, you would be an asset to LEB (writing tutorials) on gigs like this. You would simply reach out to the team, and contribute any articles of your choice, and there's a high chance they'll feature it.

I know I would engage and happily read!

My router is Netgear R7500v1. Currenlty using Openwrt. Everythingg works except 5Gzh band, That was not compatible with openwrt. Do you think any other firmwares support this router?

I was just checking into it actually as I use "Fresh Tomato" on mine but its a Broadcom chipset and thats all they support, seems the R7500v1 is Qualcomm Atheros and OpenWRT is generally the best bet for these routers. I can do a bit more looking into it, might be a case of doing a custom build with the binary driver blobs from Qualcomm to make it work.

Haven't looked at DD-WRT yet, but that is a possiblity as well.

EDIT: Preliminary search shows the same issue with DD-WRT but I'm looking at older threads.

I gave up 5GHz after some digging. Will try again with your help.

Seems the community as a whole has given up on 5GHz with open source solutions on these routers, I assume Qualcomm is starting to lock down drivers in some way. I'm a little bit behind as the newest Netgear I regularly do custom firmware work on would be an R7000. I tend to run a...few...many...generations behind lol. I support the stuff that companies have stopped updating usually.

Personally still run the R6300v2 (Broadcom BCM4708A0) running self compiled builds of Fresh Tomato, and a Linksys EA6350v3 (Qualcomm Atheros IPQ4018) running OpenWRT as my primaries. Some might consider these outdated but in my house gigabit is just fine, and wireless is just for convenience. ;)

Wondering if you'd have some goodies for my portable extender??

    https://www.dlink.com/en/products/dap-1325-n300-wi-fi-range-extender

Seems to be supported by OpenWRT, barely, but even basic support opens the door to some custom builds.

It is almost 4AM here, I need to get some sleep, but hit me up on Discord or when I hop back in the thread tomorrow and hopefully we can squeeze a little more performace out of that bad boy.

I do like D-Link hardware, I just wish they were a little more open source friendly because they have so much potential.

You must get some SLEEP! else by the time you wake up, fiendly godslayer will be posting away crapshit to xbox glory!

    I detect a challenge! Let's gooo!

@suut said: dc2-la is very fast for china.

I was wondering why there are no more deals for dc1-LA for vps/shared? (aon center, i suppose)

We did discontinue our VPS offerings in DC-01 -- we moved away from SATA and all new offerings are either SSD or NVMe. We have about ~30 nodes remaining that are still SATA, which is an accomplishment from what we originally did have as SATA. Our focus has been upgrading customers to our pure SSD product line at no additional cost.

LAX-DC02 has been a fan favorite, especially for users in China. Connectivity while it isn't perfect for the entire region, it's a great performing network for many with the region. So we often see positive feedback regarding the performance on both the hardware and network. LAX-DC-02 is the AON Center building in DTLA, what a nice building by the way.

DC-01 is still alive, and mostly bare metal at this point. This facility is LA2 (Coresite Alameda).

My two latest builds (for the gamers in the house). What would you change?

And here I'm who always runs out of RAM....

oh yes... i used to dip it in water glass to win a bet often :D

i wish something as innovative would come these days... and yes... red lens was actually a defy plus with some things disabled from the chipset... flashing red lens roms would enable HD recordings and unlocked the camera... good o'l days...

Ha ha. good old days indeed. Flashing was so much fun. Now with GBs and GBs of important data, can't even thinking of flashing..

That defy was the best phone I ever had. I got a lg g8x last year. I tried that waterproof adventure thing on this phone, and my power button didn't work for 3 days. 😝

    Roflmao...
Yes... Gbs of important data... Back then SD cards ruled the world... All important mp3 songs/photos and what not on it...

Crashed the phone? Put the card in the new phone and enjoy!

I got a redmi k20 pro in 2019 august. It has to be the first time i have bought a flagship and honestly, the benefits clearly outrun the costs. Its a decent phone and i think it can help me with one more year at the very least.

Or till @dustinc plans to give away an iphone 13 max pro

Ha ha. You won't leave @dustinc until he gives you something..

K20 is good device. I used Poco F1 before getting this G8X. F1 is such a wonderful developer friendly device. Flashed lots of ROMs intlo. No worry about bricking. These phones are real flagship killers.

Yes k20 was supposed to be a successor to f1. I actually ordered and cancelled the F1. K20 was overpriced, but i still bit the bullet. It was the flagship xiaomi phone.

I have been very lucky with mi phones, they are definitely built to last. I had redmi 1s, the first phone to launch in our country. It still powered up and worked after 7 years :-l .

I do itch for an upgrade sometimes, but its more like based out of greed than necessity. So i defer it for a year, not much has actually changed in the tehnology landscape except faster charging and higher refresh rate.

And i wont leave dustinc till he gives me all the goodies πŸ‘ΏπŸ‘ΏπŸ‘Ώ

i wish something as innovative would come these days... and yes... red lens was actually a defy plus with some things disabled from the chipset... flashing red lens roms would enable HD recordings and unlocked the camera... good o'l days...

Ha ha. good old days indeed.

True. These are great phones. I bought the F1 when they launched the red color. It felt awesome. As the warranty doesn't void even if we unlock bootloader, I unlocked the phone on 3rd day itself. Flashed a xiaomi EU ROM. These EU roms are better than normal ROMs, without mi ads and bloatware.

I waited long for them to launch F2, but they didn't. So I bought G8X. (for almost same price as Poco F1, on flipkart bigbillion sale) Dual Screen pulled me. But never used the dual screen extension till now, apart from experimenting few hours. This is a good phone, but no developer support. No ROMs nothing. There are some experiments in xda, but I didn't take risk.

Thats true. The processors and RAM reached a point, where we don't see the difference anymore in performance, except in benchmarking.

Camera is the only thing, that keeps improving and noticeable. I love photography, so I play a lot with camera. Always wanted to buy a decent DSLR (not entry level). But don't have budget for it. So I check the cam reviews first, whenever I buy some mobile. 😎
