240Hz monitors? You play a lot of FPS games @dustinc ?

The only game I play (for now that is) Warzone -- and the graphics, FPS are pretty good with these builds. I had https://sensequality.com/ work his optimization magic.

Holy shit, I do not charge enough for what I do.

Get in on it! Tons of opportunity.

I love optimization and I sometimes even do it for free. I can get a Core 2 Quad and a Radeon 4000 series on an Intel mobo built in '06 playing games from 2016 and made an R6300v2 Netgear that is probably 10 years old now outperform a new Nighthawk so damn well my buddy returned it for the few hundred he spent on it.

I mean, spec wise? No I can't beat spendy hardware, but I can do some interesting things with what others consider to be useless.

Its just a challenge I enjoy taking on.

That's awesome man - always respect people who have that gift, one thing that I love seeing is when people create awesome projects out of raspberry pi.

When I got my first Raspberry Pi I was in heaven, but at the same time it took away the challenge of making a device do something it was never meant to do.

They are super fun and useful, I've got a 3B+, a 4 w/ 4GB RAM, and also a lesser known Banana Pi R2 that I built into a custom 4G LTE router using a Sierra Wireless mPCI card, was quite useful when I lived out in the boonies where 1.5mbit DSL w/ 300ms ping was the best you could get.

The 4G ripped 40mbit up and down and 40ms ping, what an upgrade.

    Excellent maker devices.

Totally agree, got some Raspberry Pi boards doing nearly everything I could think of, including virtualisation - recently they have joined those GPUs fate as well, got rare and expensive.

We can do wonders when our budget is very tight, right... 😜

Exactly. When money is tight, we do what we can with what we have.

I like breathing new life into old gear, but yeah it was born from necessity originally lol

Me too.. I like tinkering the with old hardware as well. I love flashing new firmware from xda in my old mobiles.

Recently started tinkering with routers too.. Flashed openwrt in my Nighthawk 7500 .. So far good..

You ever need any help doing custom FW on Netgears (or others) hit me up, I have done so much work with 'em and have just tons of data saved on this. I hit up random people on Reddit and fix their "bricked" routers for free just because I've put so much work in myself and would rather not see them go in the trash.

My router is Netgear R7500v1. Currenlty using Openwrt. Everythingg works except 5Gzh band, That was not compatible with openwrt. Do you think any other firmwares support this router?

I was just checking into it actually as I use "Fresh Tomato" on mine but its a Broadcom chipset and thats all they support, seems the R7500v1 is Qualcomm Atheros and OpenWRT is generally the best bet for these routers. I can do a bit more looking into it, might be a case of doing a custom build with the binary driver blobs from Qualcomm to make it work.

Haven't looked at DD-WRT yet, but that is a possiblity as well.

EDIT: Preliminary search shows the same issue with DD-WRT but I'm looking at older threads.

Add me on Discord BlazinDimes#5392 if you want, I'm intrigued and wouldn't mind finding out if there is a solution to this problem. Just don't feel like going too in depth at 2AM lol

Yes, I posted my Discord publicly, you're all welcome to add me, troll me, beg for memes, all of the above.

I gave up 5GHz after some digging. Will try again with your help.

I'm really glad I grabbed mine when I did, same with my budget gaming laptop that only has a 1050ti. Right before the chip shortage this thing was $450 and now it goes for almost a grand.

Also glad I like a carb'd engine so project cars are free to sit neglected only because I "don't have time" instead of "an ECU costs $9000 now" haha

Seems the community as a whole has given up on 5GHz with open source solutions on these routers, I assume Qualcomm is starting to lock down drivers in some way. I'm a little bit behind as the newest Netgear I regularly do custom firmware work on would be an R7000. I tend to run a...few...many...generations behind lol. I support the stuff that companies have stopped updating usually.

Personally still run the R6300v2 (Broadcom BCM4708A0) running self compiled builds of Fresh Tomato, and a Linksys EA6350v3 (Qualcomm Atheros IPQ4018) running OpenWRT as my primaries. Some might consider these outdated but in my house gigabit is just fine, and wireless is just for convenience. ;)

Seems to be supported by OpenWRT, barely, but even basic support opens the door to some custom builds.

It is almost 4AM here, I need to get some sleep, but hit me up on Discord or when I hop back in the thread tomorrow and hopefully we can squeeze a little more performace out of that bad boy.

Its just a challenge I enjoy taking on.

Some might consider these outdated but in my house gigabit is just fine, and wireless is just for convenience. ;)

Wondering if you'd have some goodies for my portable extender??

    https://www.dlink.com/en/products/dap-1325-n300-wi-fi-range-extender

Seems to be supported by OpenWRT, barely, but even basic support opens the door to some custom builds.

It is almost 4AM here, I need to get some sleep, but hit me up on Discord or when I hop back in the thread tomorrow and hopefully we can squeeze a little more performace out of that bad boy.

I do like D-Link hardware, I just wish they were a little more open source friendly because they have so much potential.

You must get some SLEEP! else by the time you wake up, fiendly godslayer will be posting away crapshit to xbox glory!

I shall sleep! I trust you will keep the party going lol.

I leave y'all with this, goodnight!

Yup, it seems that way. Community has given up this 5GHz. The router was also discontinued a few years back.

Ha ha.. I also use gigabit lan for work. My R7500 is also connected to WD MyCloudMirror NAS server. Everything works fine with 1gbps LAN. But if I need to access anything on my NAS through wifi, either thorugh laptop or through mobile , it just sucks.

Flashing ROMs was the best thing that I enjoyed a lot with my mobiles. My first experience with flashing was with Motorola Defy.. upgrading from Eclari to Froyo. to Gingerbread.. that was an awesome experience.

especially on dense urban areas, 2.4GHz vs 5GHz is night and day

later you add additional improvements of WiFi 6, and when you experience 108MB/s (real life scenario, transferring Linux ISO file from/to NAS, not synthetic test) through air on you laptop, then you never go back

and WiFi 6E (with third, 6GHz band) is about to enter mass market, so it will be even better

so unless you are Richard Stallman, don't wait till open source solutions will be ready for cutting edge radio technologies, as it will not gonna happen soon

life is to short to stuck on 2.4GHz WiFi in 2022...
