Hong Kong VPS and GFW
Hi
I'm planning in a near future to add a VPS to serve Asian visitors.
Testing GreenCloud Hong Kong IP with ping.sx, it gives the best average ping results, but from my reading HK is affected by GFW and from a privacy perspective Chinese Government can access data whenever they want.
It's advisable to avoid HK and look for other DC or this is not a problem?
Singapore has some offers but looks like HK has a more central location to serve Asian visitors.

Maybe @randvegeta and @jayjay can help you.
@WebHorizon I am serving Asian users through their servers and it is perfect for the Asian audiences.
If your service is not pornographic or hostile content, it's fine.
As long as there is no attempt to undermine the great Communist Party, all will be well.
My push-ups delivery network has two nodes in APAC:
I just looked at GreenKVM Hong Kong.
It has lower latency to China, compared to serving China from Tokyo.
However, VPS in Hong Kong is more expensive than Tokyo or Singapore.
I don't worry about GFW because push-ups are legal in China.
If you plan to run service on IPv4, you need dedicated IPv4; if you buy NAT service and MJJ installs VPN, the whole IP gets blocked.
The rights to define whether a website is legal or not are held by CCP, which is evil by nature. I fail to see any legitimacy when GFW blocks WikiPedia, Gmail, DuckDuckGo, ... you may refer to GFW-List to see a part of the whole.
On the other hand, CCP has imposed the draconian National Security Law on Hong Kong since 2020/07/01, which has made tens of thousands of HongKongers emigrate to escape the governance of evil CCP.
So if your service is not time-intolerant, I would advice you to avoid VPS in China(including Hong Kong, Macao) at all. After all, why bother to risk your source code and data when there are reliable service providers.
@ask_seek_knock how do you translate GFW-List to domain names?
Should be
base64 -d
, notbase64 -D
;base64: invalid option -- 'D'
Macs and their stupid non-standard switches.
What service do you provide?
For an ordinary website, as long as visitors' connections to your server are free of packet loss, you don't have to worry about the ping command's round-trip time.
There is nothing illegal, just a website with some comments on it.
ATM I already have content in US and EU, just need to expand to get faster response in Asia.
Edit: I have nothing to hide, the only thing i don't like is Chinese policy. Singapore would be my next option.
