A newbie question about VPS hosting
Hi,
So I'm planning to host my Wordpress website on a DO droplet (Premium AMD $6/mo) however I'm still not sure if I should deploy it directly using OpenLiteSpeed WordPress or use Cyberpanel then mange it from there ? I 'have been playing with the panel lately and it seemed to me that is much easier and more secure with it but performance wise I don't know if it is a good idea ! so based on your experiences which is the best overall option here ?
Comments
depending how much visitors you need, a vps may be overkill anyways, but the panel shouldn't hurt if you like having it
I would learn the basics of Linux and then learn how to set up a lightweight webserver such as LightHTTPD. DigitalOcean would likely be overkill for your use case and you can lower your costs if you learn how to manage your server manually.
For a basic Wordpress website you can start from shared hosting cheaper than $6 per month and get premium service and support.
There are too many complains about the stability of Cyberpanel. I don't think it's a good idea to start with if you're new to vps hosting.
If you dont know anything about managing and you want just one site then go with GOOD shared hosting with high cpu/mem limits. NexusBytes is good choice for that.
Cant' I just deploy it and do some basic security tweaks and let it run ? is there any other necessary things I'm not aware of ?
As long as the issues are not related to the security I think it's fine for a single website or two I won't do any complicated stuff.
Shared hosting sucks ! and it isn't suitable in the long run ,besides it isn't any cheaper than VPS hosting especially for a website that will receive a significant amount of traffic .
There are some great hosting providers out there that can offer a good Shared hosting package which you can also scale. But if you really, directly want to start with a VPS i understand.
I recommend you going with a little more well-established provider. The simplest to start is hetzner, and specifically their CPX vms. You can start out easily with Hetzner's lamp template with Wordpress here:
https://docs.hetzner.com/cloud/apps/list/wordpress
Otherwise, a plain Ubuntu 20.04 VM with centminmod would be good.
You will have to update your server regulary to prevent any oopsie-hacks.
Does CentMinMod support Ubuntu and Debian?
If you are using Debian/Ubuntu, you could use webinoly, simple LEMP stack, you could deploy a new website within 15 minutes script setup.
If you are new to hosting yourself I'd definitely recommend to use a specialised wordpress hosting (or support, managed, pick a keyword) that takes care of that. without the proper care it will become skynet and take over the world
