Help Understanding ARIN ASN Fees Please
Howdy,
Am I reading/understanding this right
https://www.arin.net/resources/fees/fee_schedule/
ARIN charges $500 to be assigned an ASN, plus the yearly fee? Or am I missing something (obvious)?
I need two ASNs for what I want to do, RIPE seems to be fairly cheap/easy to get ASNs, so I am assuming I am missing something..

$500 setup $500 annual
The RIR to become a member of/join or request resources from depends on a number of factors.
Such as the Region the Organization seeking an ASN and/or IP-Resources is based, plus to some extend where it operates it networks.
Keep in mind RIR's have similar but not identical policies both with regards to assignments, membership and policies.
Are you able to share why you would need two different AS-Numbers (justification)?
Are you able to share why you did not ask in the corresponding forums thread?
From the ARIN linked page,
Annual
An organization’s annual fee is due each year at the end of their anniversary month (the month of their initial assignment). Annual maintenance fees are $150 USD for each ASN, $150 USD for each IPv4 address block, and $150 USD for each IPv6 address block assigned to the organization.
And
ASNs with Registration Services Plan
Organizations only holding ASN(s) may choose to permanently enroll in the Registration Services Plan, which includes ARIN Membership. An organization will be assessed the ASN initial fee and $250 USD for the Registration Services Plan consistent with the 3X-Small Services category. The annual fee to maintain the ASN and Registration Services Plan fee is $250 USD regardless of the number of ASNs assigned by ARIN.
So not $500 annual, but also not sure if the ASN annual fee is included in the Registration Services Plan paid for IP blocks.
I want to split my eventual IP block and announce from different locations/sites, not anycasted.
I see that thread as just a Buy/Sell thread.. I read a number of pages, didn't see any similar questions, just wants and offers.
I see in that thread providers offering RIPE ASNs for at most, 100 per year.
The routing depends on the prefix. Typically the most specific you are going to see on global bgp advertisements is a /24 for ipv4 or /48 for ipv6.
So depening on the size of your allocation/assignments this may or may not be possible.
As for the AS Number itself, there is no specific need/requirement to use one per location/site. As the "Path"/"Routes" will depend on the prefix and the peers its advertised to.
Maybe the moderators can merge...
The process as far as i understand it, is different depending on the RIR.
Again the RIR you get resources from depends on where you/your org are located and the network will be situated for the most part.
So your choice will be limited based on those factors rather than "where it is cheaper".
RipeNcc has a sponsoring LIR process, where a LIR can request resources on behalf of end-users (such as ipv6 pi space or an AS-Number).
The RipeNCC Members (Lir's) request the resource on your behalf based on the documentation you provide them with and that they verify. There are no guarantees that your requests will be approved if they do not meet eligibility criteria and justification based on the policies.
For Arin, i understand that there currently is no sponsoring lir process for as-numbers, so you have to deal with them directly.
And why would you need two different AS numbers to do that?
Just announce the subnets you want from each location by using your single ASN and be happy.
That's how it works for Telia, Google and everyone else and I don't see any reason why it shouldn't for you.
Alright then, I stand corrected. It has been a long time since I've worked with BGP. It was my understanding that an ASN advertised the same IP blocks everywhere.
So yes, I will be happy!
Thank you.
Yes, I am aware
It will be..
I thought that an ASN was supposed to advertise the same IPs everywhere, that one needed separate ASNs not to anycast.
This is very good news for me.
Indeed, but I was thinking in terms of 'working for now, fix it when I could', if I needed a second ASN, that was going to be an extra $550USD. I figured I could get away with using a RIPE ASN for a few months.
All good now
For anybody else who may search.
Renewal was $500, as suspected, the ASN was a one time charge to issue, the "maintenance" for the ASN is included in the yearly Registration Services Plan.
