Too much traffic is a common form of DDoS attack. Perhaps the most common amongst the many varieties that exist.

Yes, but it's genuine traffic. A DDoS is attack is when someone intently seeks to make a service/machine/resource unavailable. DDoS protection won't protect against genuine traffic.
