How SSH got port 22
TLDR
FTP was port 21 and TELNET was port 23 so to have some aura of credibility, developer applied for port 22 to IANA and request was granted.

In the early 90s, my university used kerberized telnet. I remember sitting in one of the labs and putting an ethernet adapter into promiscuous mode and watching packets fly by...could immediately tell who was kerberized and who wasn't. I don't remember ssh really picking up until OpenSSH came along in 1999.
