I have purchased the 1TB SATA Atom deal. I will be reviewing them shortly. Thanks for sharing your experience
Update:
This morning (ca. 10 am) I got lectured by another north american support person on how to use IPMI. He obviously didn't even care to read the ticket which clearly showed that I opened it with a red "Health" value from IPMI.
Additionally I learned that my unmanaged cheap server is ... gasp ... unmanaged.
I'll call it another lost day wasted by someones need to display his ignorance and idiocy.
This was day 5. Let's see whether on day 6 they'll finally do what they promised on day 2 (to provide me replacement server)...
patience..... they are usually nice to get a replacement in a different location or refund that months charge. Happened with me once...
Yes, I hear you. I am just saying what they gave me... initially an option to refund,.. half day later, asked if it was OK to switch the location.. and then some time back, they were able to replace my server with a new IP in same location.
News: A bit before 8 pm (NYC time it seems) I was informed about having gotten a replacement machine (by yet another support person, this time from southern Europe).
However they forgot my 2nd IP and also to give me IPMI access (one has to ask for that with Oneprovider).
With a bit of luck I'll be able to report this evening (european time) that the problem is fully solved - after almost 6 days.
Nothing to add about your experience with OneProvider support. That's how it is but if you cut down your expectations it might be okay (for non-critical stuff).
Regarding IPMI I made the experience that it automatically becomes visible and accesible in their web panel about four hours after performing the initial install. Don't know why bur it was the case with my last three servers.
It's due to Online, not OneProv. And (unless some problem occurs) it takes little more than 1 hour actually.
Update: Yay! Yesterday evening (european time) I had a replacement and working IPMI.
And I seem to have noted a hint that Oneprovider is sorry that Online is so sh_tty.
All in all not at all a nice experience but neither one to bash Oneprovider hard.
Kinda temped to get that Xeon X3450 for 13euro
At last but not least, they should give you 1 additional month free
Yes, probably they should. And maybe they did or do, I don't know because I cared only for my server working again.
How are you liking your server now ?
Yes and no. Yes, I like it, it runs fine. But: my old server had a much faster disk while the new server has considerably better processor/memory values (I of course benchmarked both of them) although theoretically they should be the same or at least very, very similar.
Strange things at Online, really strange things ...
€15.00 is a good offer!
Thanks for the contribution to get to 50 posts for free VPS.
Spammy posts wont count anyway.
spammy posts pollute the refined atmosphere of erudite discussion here, to which I have become accustomed as of late
They are an abomination to all that is proper in this fine forum, and a sure sign that the end is nigh
No sarcasm. No sarcasm. You're the sarcasm!
I ordered the server with the L3426 processor three days ago, look at the state of the two hard drives...
--
The overall performance of the server is good for the price, but the drives are... old (and end of life?). 8 YEARS !
Do you think they should just throw away perfectly working hard drives (0.00 errors in any of the readings), and then buy brand new ones to put into these 10-20 EUR servers?
That's not what I said. I say that the hard drive is very old. There is still a chance he will die in the short term, no? Or I don't know anything, but the value "004" or "009" on the hard drives isn't very reassuring...
No. If it's working with no errors of any kind, there's nothing to point out that it's expected to die in a short term.
What's your issue with value 4? It's the number of power on/off cycles, and 19 times it has been powered on. Is that too much for you also?
So you are a specialist, the hard drive can live again how long without trouble? I try to understand.
The value 4? This is not the percentage of the lifetime of the hard drive? Certainly there are no errors but I still have a doubt when I put important data on such a server.
@neph The value must be understood in relation to the threshold (THRESH). For example, power-on hours has a threshold of 0. Your values are 4 and 9, which are above the threshold or the value that is considered dangerous. It is when you start to go below the threshold that your drive MAY be at risk of failing.
Mechanical drives typically fail when they are very new or very old. I am not sure if number of power on hours is a good guide to the health of mechanical drives because if there wasn't a lot of reading and writing, the spindle is probably ok. All considered, I wouldn't worry too much. You should have backups if your data is that important. Even brand new things can be dead on arrival. You really should not worry unnecessarily.
@poisson Thanks for the explanations, I understand better. My servers have always had a little more recent disks than this one... A hard disk can of course crash after 4 or 5 years while a hard disk that is 8 years old can perhaps work a moment. If I can choose, I prefer a hard drive a little more recent. It's stupid but it reassures me a little more. That doesn't prevent to make backups obviously.
You need to be realistic about the price you are paying. Unless the previous hdd had failed, you probably are going to get old drives for this price.
You're right, I have some servers at this host and the price / quality ratio is very interesting. I have another server that costs 5 or 7 euros more than this one, and its hard drive isn't as old. This server is just very old. Personally I prefer to put a few euros more, but everyone does as he wants
