WildCard SSL

I am interested in self-hosting sandstorm.io
It requires a wildcard SSL. They do not encourage LetsEncrypt Certs as it not be feasible to sustain the rate-limit

I use LetsEncrypt all the time for other instances.

This is a personal project so cheaper the better. Any suggestions welcome.

Thank you.

Wow, thats expensive... $237 for a cert. Never realized it was so expensive (after using LetsEncrypt for the longest time)

    1. you get what you pay..
A WildCard SSL will cover all of your subdomains

    2. Where you find the that price? probably directly from their official website.. right?
      Even we sale them $50/year

Solution: Buy it from a reseller like namecheap/godaddy.

    Best Options
    1. https://www.namecheap.com/security/ssl-certificates/comodo/positivessl-wildcard/

    It's only $109.76 USD for 2 years

    1. https://www.namecheap.com/security/ssl-certificates/comodo/premiumssl-wildcard/

It's only $335 USD in total for 2 years (Note: This one is organization validation so paperwork may needed)

I would strongly recommend you to get one from a reseller like namecheap

  • Why are you have rate limit problem with Letsencrypt? Just request a wildcard cert from Let's Encrypt and renew every 90 day

  • I have several wildcard certs with LetsEncrypt; no problems with them. The rate-limiting comment doesn't make sense - that just has to do with how many certs you request, not how many hosts are associated with each cert.

It is a bit more of a pain to auto-renew wildcard certs, but it's doable if you have the right DNS server and access. Otherwise you're on the hook for manual renewal every 90 days, which isn't that onerous.

You could try use their own .sandcats.io domain. Also, the documentation on Sandstorm was written on a time where they didn't support Wildcard certificates yet. With the new Wildcard certificate, one certificate *.johndoe.com would fit your needs and Sandstorm's itself.

Thanks for confirming what I just said.

  • Yeah I'm also confused about the rate limit issue: how many certificates do you need?

Gogetssl through their reseller program is $78/2 years.

  • I have found another SSL provider for Wildcard SSL certificates.

    Check this - https://cheapsslsecurity.com/comodo/positivessl-wildcard.html

    at $53.95/year

    LetsEncrypt, ZeroSSL
    acme.sh
    Using ZeroSSL.com CA
ZeroSSL doesn't have rate limits. One can issue unlimited TLS/SSL certificate valid for 90 days (ref).

Better date blind than a blind date.

Actually that’s not true, dates with a blind person are excellent.
