Virmach no $8-10 /y in LA again?

KVM with 12GB RAM, 16x cores, 300GB SSD, and 2TB BW for that price would be cool :P

You should have ordered the VirMach Buffalo wings - they've got millions.

Picked up one... I'm going to have to work out what to do with all these VPSes I'm buying.

For a dumb storage server with 512MB RAM, is it better to have OVZ or KVM?

  • I prefer KVM overall but OVZ should work just fine unless you use somethign weird for a backend. I've had a backup server on ovz for a few years now that only has 1 core (not virmach) and works great.

So the fact that the RAM the OS uses is out of the 512MB doesn't make much difference?

  • I've used duplicity & restic as backend for that system (1 core / 512mb ram / 512gb disk / 256mb swap / hard limit on io which i forget right off). Duplicity made it chug, but also made everything else chug too at backup times, which is why I switched it to restic

Either is fine for that use case. OpenVZ tends to be cheaper, has slightly better performance in some cases, and lower overheads so hosts can run more guests per machine (which is usually what explains the price difference). If you're fine with Linux and don't have any fancy requirements, then OpenVZ is fine.

KVM is essentially a virtual machine, whereas OpenVZ is containerization. KVM is much more flexible. KVM is good when you want to run any OS of your choosing or install your own kernel (OpenVZ is limited to Linux with the kernel provided by the host, as it shares the same kernel across all guests), when you require dedicated resources (it's easier for a host to to oversell with OpenVZ compared to with KVM).

A basic Linux system is fine on OpenVZ, but for more advanced usage (eg. if you want to use LXC or OpenVZ yourself and have multiple virtual machines on your virtual machine  , or if you want to use disk encryption) you'll want KVM.

Yeah, OVZ is decent for basic stuff, my personal leaning is to try and remove most of my OVZ though to more standardize stuff
