OVH/Kimsufi stabbing existing customers in the chest, forget your back!
Hey Guys,
For those who have not noticed... Kimsufi raised prices on their dedis by a few dollars, talking about how they are aiming to provide better services, etc. to their customers a few months ago. For example, my atom went to $7.99/month. Then shortly after, they dropped prices for same servers to $4.99/month. When I consulted them on the price change, they said they cannot price match. Instead, you have to cancel existing plan and then buy it again (paying setup fee again). This has increased overhead for them, but they are just milking us for more setup fees in my perspective, or charging existing customers more.
Bit of a shit play in my opinion. What do you think?
- Ah fuck it, it's idling away so just keep paying $3/month more, per server111 votes
- Be a wimp and cancel, and then wait to rebuy server when in stock22.52%
- Boycott!! We can't trust them.33.33%
- Make an in person visit and start a protest19.82%
- Huh, look at that, I need a bigger server for my porn anyways24.32%

Which Atom?
When mcdonalds has a sale they dont refund prior purchases. When you buy somerhing on monthly plan they dont give you new rate. You basically are whining over marketing used everywhere
Do you have a monthly subscription to McDonalds?
Everyone knows to pay 3 yearly in advance to lock in prices

This seems really scummy. But is there any proof they are doing that though? I've contacted them by email before and they seem really nice.
Same here, went from 35 to 48 without notice. Opened a ticket but couldn't do any.
move to hetzner ... end of story... for now.
It's scummy as they raised the price only to drop it for the same product. They're giving their older customers the shaft. I noticed the same happened with mine but I can't be bothered. I spend so much on idle servers it's ridiculous probably like $60 for total unused. I was trying to count it all and gave up. I'm too damn lazy. I'll probably pick up a KS-2 anyway they're refreshed hardware?
They increased pricing across the board, it was announced to customers - they then started to offer cheaper servers again (in some cases).
If you're unhappy and wanna save $3 per month then wait for the box to come in stock and migrate things and save your $3.
I also think it sucks that providers give discounts to new orders sometimes and the same discount doesn't apply to existing orders, maybe we should also boycott all providers that does recurring discounts, it's not fair for those people that don't wanna migrate their stuff.
to be honest, I think it's kind of silly to create a thread on LET because you feel scammed due to $3 per month.
Good you don't have to pay a decent amount of money to a provider and see a 2% increase yearly because of inflation rates, where 2% is a few hundred euro per month.
If those $3 impacted your life so much, you wouldn't even waste the 3 minutes it took you to write the post, because the 3 minutes could have been spend on more important things, such as migrating your stuff to a $3/month cheaper server.
We're talking about big cash here, clearly.
Look for a better and cheaper provider if you're unhappy - maybe check novadedi.net for cheap stuff.
Just curious, could you be more specific? Do you have a KS-2 or a KS-3? The current regular prices for these are €4,99 (KS-2) and €7,99 (KS-3), respectively (before VAT).
Are you saying that you have a KS-2 and that you're now paying €7,99 for it? Try to be more specific, otherwise it seems like you're trying to be sensationalist.
Well, my Atom from 2013, which has the same specs as the current KS1, costs more.
3.99 + VAT vs 5.99 + VAT
Initially, the Atom was 2.99 + VAT, in 2013.
OVH is known, for not reducing old servers price, so if you bought it then, the price can only increase, not decrease.
Not to mention of the setup fee, which keeps users away from switching, only pays off if you keep the server like another year.
Okay, if I understand well, you originally bought in 2013 a KS-1 for €2,99 + VAT, have kept it since then, and you now pay €5,99 + VAT for it? The specs are exactly the same? By the way, was €2,99 for a KS-1 in 2013 a promotional price? If yes, what was the regular price at that time?
I agree that if the regular price of the KS-1 is currently €3,99 + VAT, then it's not so great that someone who bought a KS-1 in 2013 is now paying €5,99 + VAT.
@Neoon: At the same time, if the specs of the product called "KS-1" have changed in any way, Kimsufi could try to argue that that was a different product (despite the same name), and so the regular price now doesn't necessarily apply to that (former) product.
Just trying to make sense of their decision ...
Yes.
Yes
No

Yes
@Neoon: Okay, I see, not so great.
I think that the OP's (= @huntercop's) case is a little different, because he mentions different prices, but I guess that the phenomenon is the same.
Does OVH also have this practice, or is it Kimsufi more specifically?
Yeah, they shouldn't have raised that price by more than €1, which would match the current regular price.
It sucks, I know.
But how do you guys deal with inflation in real world?
Well, the problem in this case isn't really inflation per se.
It does seem odd to charge long-standing customers €5,99/month for product P, whereas at the beginning they paid €2,99/month for P, but to charge new customers €3,99/month for P, where €3,99/month is now the regular price (not a promotional price).
I know that.
I was just asking the question.
Inflation works for everyone across the board. How I deal with it? Printing Monopoly money and watching Breaking Bad.
I pay for rent, groceries, water and gas 3 years in advance.
just cancel it all and get over it
hetzner boxes to the rescue
They have updated their prices and now Kimsufi cost 59.50 € per yer (with 24 % VAT). I want know if there are some cheaper alternatives available?
Because you need to move to a different server configuration, it is even cheaper.
Only setup fee a worse thing prevent from do these steps. Never buy if provider asking for setup fee over monthly charges. Better to boycott setup fee and ID checking.
Why ovh when you can hetzner?
This has always been like; at least for the last 10+ years (since I am with them). So, yes it's annoying, but this is their terms, and it's widely known. So when you get a server with them, you perfectly know that your leasing will never be lowered, and, every few year may increase by some $. This is (in)famous, but it's know.
As for setup fees, there was a time where each refresh of their offers were so much better than the previous ones, that people were migrating in mass , so they set up fees, to limit this. Some were also abusing of the ease to switch server, frequently, (as usual, because of some abusers, everybody pay).
I do agree that, there should be a mechanism to get ride of setup fees, like for example, of a quarterly payment or yearly payment. Or even on KS which are very old hardware.
For me Hetzner charges the Russian VAT, and OVH doesn't. In fact nobody else on the LE* market does (Online.net, OneProvider, FirstHeberg, Linode, DigitalOcean, etc, etc...), only Hetzner. So they are not only supporting the corrupt kleptocracy of Putin's government (if they even transfer the VAT and not simply pocketing it), but also 20% more expensive. For me that's enough of a reason to never consider anything from Hetzner, no matter what.
