HW Raid or SW Raid

AlexanderMAlexanderM Member, Patron Provider, Top Host

For a KVM VPS Node, i was going to get HW Raid10 w/ BBU. But i was wondering, for a budget service, is HW RAID worth it?

Raid card would be a LSI 9260-4i RAID10 w/ BBU (4x1TB) And would cost me $50/month (Renting from DC)

What I/O Would you expect from the HWRAID /w BBU? SW RAID10 with 4x1TB is about 180MB/s

Cheers

Comments

  • Get 2 x 1TB more and do SW

  • Raid Card + BBU = two additional points of failure. If you were looking for Linux only, just go software RAID.

@AlexanderM you can learn this the hard way or the easy way. If you want the easy way then just get a decent RAID 10 controller with BBU and call it a day :)

+1 for HW RAID + BBU

+1 for HW RAID 10 + BBU. Its usually about 300+ mbps that way with enterprise drives. More if you do a ssd cache.
