Photo and document storage opinion

Self hosted or cloud provider?

Just personal docs and photos. Need to start backing them and archiving...

Thanks.

  • If you have other software usage daily and have family members or friends to share, I would recommend MSFT Office 365 for Home, 5 users. 1T storage per user and you have latest office suite.

You could find some deals about $80 per year.

Reliable hosting without data lost, maybe OVH/online.net VPS (with Raid) are good choices, and you must build remote sync by yourself.

However, cloud drive may be a better way to storage, easier than host on your own machine. If there's adult contents included, do not choose these cloud service followed according to their TOS/AUP:

    Google Drive (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/9kgwnp/porn-on-google-drive-error)

pCloud (https://www.pcloud.com/terms_and_conditions.html : Acceptable Use of the Site and Services : transmit anything that is ... pornographic ...)

hubiC (https://hubic.com/en/contracts/Contrat_hubiC_2014.pdf : ARTICLE 5:OBLIGATIONS AND LIABILITY OF THE CUSTOMER: The Customer is prohibited from using, storing and / or sharing ... any content which incites ... pornography.)

Didn't find any related rules via iCloud / Onedrive.

Recommand: mega.nz, absolutely safe if you do not share anything.

Keep a copy in local, do not trust any third-party service.

So if you're looking for a pickup truck, why not buy this Honda Civic over here, which comes with a free

O365 is not a great choice for OP. Who asked about Office? Who actually pays for Office? And OP is one person. You're taking an offer for something barely related and touting its irrelevant features.

O365 is 1TB, period. Not "you can start more cheaply". And not "you can add more if you need more". It's 1TB. That alone is reason enough to stay away. Here's another: Microsoft used to offer unlimited and was shocked it was abused. Amateurs?

(Yes, you can pretend to be the other 4 people and shard your files across the 5 accounts, but that is such a lame solution that it makes me hate Microsoft to even mention it).

What do you mean by "build remote sync by yourself"?

    No porn... personal stuff only.

    Sure.

But with cloud providers, one always feels that they could access your data? So any way to protect the same before pushing it out?

    Thanks

If you have an Android device or use Google's services, Google Photos is really easy and useful. Since I bought an original Pixel I got unlimited photo storage with the device, which I gave to one of my parents so they could store all of their "forever ago" pictures that I know they would hate if their laptop drive died.

For other files I'm not sure, a backup service like Backblaze would probably be most reliable.

Ditto. If you are primarily a Windows user and you only need 1TB, I would also suggest using Onedrive. And if you only need for 1 user, it's only USD$70/year if you want the O365 suite. It's a pretty decent deal.

If you use Mac, you could check out Dropbox. My wife likes it because she also runs the client on her mobile device and it's setup to automatically backup photos when she takes them. There's also a nice feature that supports remote device wipe if you lose your mobile. Dropbox is a bit pricey at USD$100/year. Obviously, there's also iCloud if you are Mac-centric.

I see. I believe uptown 16 megapixel is free else it will be reduced quality for Google Photos.

    Thnx

Dropbox supports both Windows and Linux with native apps. With Onedrive, I don't believe there's an official Microsoft supported Linux client but there are open-source ones.

  • How about self-hosted solutions like Seafile? Does anyone has experience with it?

2 years back I got myself a Seafile, web and client on PC are good, but Android app was a bit tricky to use. I assume they would improve that during the years.

What is the best way to manage a server when using a self hosted app like seafile/ nextcloud?

I am afraid that my server or the self hosted app could be compromised due to some vulnerability..... so is it possible to keep the data encrypted so it be protected?

    Is this possible??

  • MalinMalin Member

Self-hosted with backup on cloud is my best bet. However, it really depends on how important is the data stored.

    https://manual.seafile.com/security/security_features.html

pretty easy to use/setup ! But the iOS app somehow does not sync my photos automatically (when the app is only running in the background)
Windows client works OK, the web interface is pretty basic which is fine for data but not for photos

    Hello,

Sorry if it has been said already i read in diagonal.

You might rather store a copy at home but that will not protect your data from fire or robery. My advice would be to store at two places (for exemple at home and on hosted space ) and sync datas.

Yes I do plan on keeping a local copy. It's the hosted space I am little concerned. Maybe there is a way to keep data encrypted at rest on server.

    Btw, congratulations on the 20th

Backblaze - $95 for 2 years & unlimited storage. But its limited to per device.

    You're welcome.

Also, the best part is, their Backblaze android app lets you access your backed up files on your mobile.

So if I require any important documents (word, txt, etc.) and if I'm not near to my laptop, I can access it via my mobile. So its really a time-saver in many situations. Give Backblaze a shot ;)

    Try the following services:

    • OneDrive
    • Google Drive
    • Box.net
    • Dropbox
    • your own VPS with encryption methods, plenty software to do it.

I’ve been using Apple’s storage services for the past few months. Syncs all photos from my iDevices and other photos can be uploaded from a desktop with their software on MacOS or via web browser.

Believe there is a similar system for Android such as Google Photos.

With Apple you can even share your purchased space with up to five other users.
