Use OwnCloud
i know, just for backups its ideal(for me)
Love copy.com. I'm at 70GB right now. The linux client works great in GUI or CLI as well, which is a big deal to me. I've pretty much left dropbox behind purely in favor of how great copy.com has been so far.
Old news/ repeated stuff..
Havn't tried yet but many are using it....
trying it now, using the referrer link
As i remember, someone posted this before
http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
Or just stick with Dropbox since it works with about anything out there.
Well the problem is that dropbox has control/ownership over our files as opposed to having 100% control ourselves. A simple selfhosted alternative that's lighter than OwnCloud would be nice, something like bittorrent sync but supported on more devices and (1 to many) instead of (many to many).
How does dropbox have control? They dont own your data, they're hosting it for you just like if you stuck the data on a VPS the VPS is no different than dropbox, a 3rd party owns the servers not you.
This kind of Tin Foil hat stuff is beyond annoying. All you did is trade one system for another, both of which you have no control over.
Course dropbox is hosted on Amazon's servers.
How do you not have 100% control? You can change files as much as you want. They give you a full-fledged API. What do you want from them...?
You're not special or edgy by using ownCloud or any other self-backup software.
I recommend FreeNAS
Sugarsync
If you want something more secure use Spideroak
2 gb free space for personal use but you can expand it to 10gb using the referral program
You can login using this url to also get 1gb free

Skydrive. It's integration with Office is handy.
What makes Spideroak more secure than Dropbox?

scroll down to security features
Thanks for that....
+1 for bittorrent sync. I always hated waiting for files to sync to a central server when using Dropbox before other computers would get them. No more middle man w/ btsync.
I also really love BitTorrent sync, but right now I can't use it on any of my LEBs because of the memory usage. I can't wait for the next version which is supposed to decrease memory usage.
There was recently some fiasco where dropbox took ownership of user files, IIRC. Seems like you trust providers such as google, box.net, dropbox with your sensitive data?
Yes, I do, what of it? "Not trusting" big companies is just plain, unneeded paranoia.
Well, even if you DO put it on something self-hosted, the CIA, NSA, etc. still know what you have. They know EVERYTHING! Is my full-body tin + aluminum foil suit showing?
