although most family have moved out, i have friends there and they seemed to have dropped offline too. although it could just be the usual flakey internet or something more serious, when i have time i will call someone
Could be just a technical issue, someone cut the cables, cut the power, broke some equipment, etc.
No need to freak out over a localised internet outage that started 10 minutes ago.
@Rds100 Localised? Entirity of Syria seems to be 'out'.
Oh god, this is horrible. I feel so bad for the people right now... They're going to have to use Bing or Yahoo to find things.
Oh, the attacks are pretty bad too.
The "entirity of Syria" probably uses less total bandwidth than one medium sized USA city.
And i didn't see anyone here freak out when a national US ISP (Centurylink) had major breakage just a few hours ago - for reference see here - https://puck.nether.net/pipermail/outages/2013-May/thread.html
The entire internet in Syria is out..
@manndude - looks more widespread than google specifically.
@rds100 - local, no. The entirety of Syria is kind of a big deal. And if you read the articles it looks like only 3 ns are working throughout the country instead of the normal 80.

One mid sized US city probably hasn't got a civil war.
called a friend bassem, he said it is out but he doesn't think it's to do with politics atm.
@bcarlsonmedia AFAIK from the previous outage all outside internet connections are routed through a single building. So a power or other outage there can easily leave the entire country without internet. Unless there are some isolated places that use satellite internet and don't rely on the fiber optic infrastructure.
cough
Some routes are still in place....
However after trying to contact a host on said route...
Packets die at DTAG.
@rds100 - Interesting, didn't know that.

Yeah, the post from umbrella labs states that in the latest update
3 of the normal about 80
CNET just tweeted this,

Given the state of things I can see how it would be scary to see the Internet cut off. That's exactly what you should do when you're about to slaughter a bunch of people and you don't want it on twitter. Not that far fetched in certain venues.
Speak2Tweet,

@Infinity I hope for the best for your family and friends there.
Syria has internet ?
Yes.
People are abusing the Speak2Tweet service already,

sucks for them! mwahahaha
Well I know many of my friends have sattelite internet and are now flocking to it, it works. ADSL doesn't work though, confirmed by two friends.
Al7amdella 3la salama for satellite internet.
Typical narrowminded selfish capitalist twonk.
People are losing their communication to the outside world during a civil war in which civilians are dying! mwahaha sucks for them!
Get fucked, dude
