I just got a London vps with cloudxtiny and they claim that they have a gigabit line but the speeds are absolutely awful a vps in LA that also has a gigabit line has better downloads speeds to London.

These are the speeds of cloudxtiny:

CacheFly 205.234.175.175 20.6MB/s
Linode, Tokyo, JP 106.187.96.148 1.11MB/s
Linode, Singapore, SG 139.162.23.4 1.03MB/s
Linode, London, UK 176.58.107.39 16.3MB/s
Linode, Frankfurt, DE 139.162.130.8 4.99MB/s
Linode, Fremont, CA 50.116.14.9 361KB/s
Softlayer, Dallas, TX 173.192.68.18 745KB/s
Softlayer, Seattle, WA 67.228.112.250 949KB/s
Softlayer, Frankfurt, DE 159.122.69.4 4.09MB/s
Softlayer, Singapore, SG 119.81.28.170 519KB/s

  • What makes you think it's throttling?

Just because they have a 1Gbps port, which is most likely shared (either between other hosts and/or other VPS) doesn't mean you'll be able to achieve 1Gbps speeds.

  • Write in a ticket saying you believe there is a network issue.

sometimes the bandwidth is shared. so check for their guaranteed speed.
    edit: looks like it's shared
"Our Network is super fast. All our nodes use redundant 1 Gbit port connections and our datacentres have dedicated 10Gbit connections to the internet. "

  • I think it's caused by peering/connectivity instead of throttling, in this case, try some iperf tests then.

  • I bet you are paying .50 cents a month. How much are you paying?

It seems like their cheapest package is $5.99/mo

OP - It could be due to the shared port. Someone chugging up bandwidth. Open a ticket and let them know that you're having issues with the connection. (In worst case, it's heavily oversold and nothing you could do)

    Pay more

  • You get CacheFly 205.234.175.175 20.6MB/s so thats not bad for an cheap VPS. At least the pipe seems not to be complete full. But yes the rest is maybe some kind of peering or international traffic issue.

Well there's always Virmach as a option. You still get cheap, quality service.... but you don't know when they'll disappear, where's the profit in their specials anyway...

But no one wants to pay more than what they need to right?

  • sometimes throttling is good (not overselling the links too much)

That doesn't look throttled to me.

Their plans are $10/GB for VPS, it is more expensive than Linode and on par with DigitalOcean.

Edit: Actually with VAT included in GBP it's around $16 USD for the 1GB plan according to their order form.
