Which is the best VPN for Google Chrome? (Free ones only) plus if someone is sniffing the network, can they detect the traffic once Chrome is running on VPN?

If someone is sniffing your network packets, all they'll see is encrypted traffic going between your PC and some server, however, if the monitoring software is installed on your PC - then they can naturally see everything.

SSL will indeed hide the contents of the page & even the exact page URL - though DNS queries will still reveal you connecting to XXX.xyz, which might be what the OP is trying to avoid.
