This has more to do with the fact that you can't Trademark a name that's a common word. For example, the Sci-Fi Channel could not obtain trademark protection for the name "Sci-Fi" because it's a shortening of a common word "science-fiction" which has itself entered common usage. So they changed it to SyFy, because the cutesy misspelling has the effect of making it a unique enough thing that it can be trademarked.
It also makes it less common that you'll run into the Apple Computers/Apple Records problem. If Apple were a new startup today they'd probably pick a stupid name like iAppl or Applr or something. Fortunately for them they have billions of dollars and a phalanx of expensive lawyers.

For the record, not a good idea to post domains you don't yet own or ask what domains to buy in public. I've got a few bitcoin related domains I'm sitting on, this would of been another for a future auction.
