Looking for dedicated server used for backup only

I need a server with at least 3TB webspace (3x1, 1x3, 1x1 1x2 configuration doesn't matter). Decent CPU (not Atom) and at least 8GB RAM.
1GB network card (preferrable), I need good speed for USA

price under $40/month as traffic used will be minimal, probably under 100GB/ month after initial backup.

My best value is now at servdiscount.com
SD-i7-3770 Intel Core i7-3770 4 (8) 3,90 GHz 9390 32 GB 2 SATA
2 x 2.000 GB €39.99

But I don't really want go with them or HTZ or other European provider except for better price.

Is anyone able to make me a better offer? I repeat, this is just a backup server.

Why do you keep saying it's just for backup, then say you want good cpu and a dedi? Why not a vps storage plan? And you say you want 3TB but then say a 1x1 or 1x2 config is ok?

Hetzner auction is cheaper than the servdiscount plan you mentioned, but its speed to US is not that great.

Anyway wholesaleinternet and dacentec are the usual places to look these days. I see a Dacentec Opteron 1385 with 2x 2TB drives for $25 a month, pretty good. There are also some soyoustart servers you could look at.

Without a decent cpu/ram you can't even navigate through directories. Of course a good VPS is enough, but do you know a VPS for less than $40/month offering 3-4TB storage? I didn't found one yet.

As for dacentec, I can't find that offer, just servers starting at $45. The offer is good enough, but seems expired. Would be great if dacentec can reply.

Thanks for link, https://www.wishosting.com seems ok. I will take one soon to test the speed.

Did you ever had an Atom server 500 series or something? I had a backup server with this cpu many years ago and it was very hard, like I said, to ever navigate or copy files or do something. And I'm not trolling.

Guess you should specify that in OP. Atom D510 has a passmark of 656, while some other Atoms such as C2750 has a passmark of 3800, which is 6x faster. Maybe you just need something that's not slower than 1500?

  • Try togglebox. Been with them for 4 years. Their support is just ridiculously awesome. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week they got people on chat that know their stuff.

    didn't notice C2750 is 3800, I have a nightmare with atoms :)

If https://www.wishosting.com speed is good in USA, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

    He uses Hetzner servers FYI.

Something was wrong with your setup, or you were using a vps on an overloaded node, or something. Atoms are fine for stuff like this, just slow for heavy computation. They're comparable to desktop PC's or laptops of not that long ago. Full disk encryption might take a speed hit for high volume i/o, but even that shouldn't stop normal directory navigation etc. If it's for backups though, you can do the encryption at the other end.

Right now there are some Kimsufi servers with Atom and 2TB disk on flash sale for 8 euro/mo + 10 setup (kimsufi.com/en) so that might be an option.
