TrueCrypt Alternative

Hello,

I am looking for a TrueCrypt alternative that meets the below criteria.

  • Supports Debian and Mac OS
  • Stores files in a container that can be mounted

Go go go

Comments

  • I use VeraCrypt.

"VeraCrypt is a free disk encryption software brought to you by IDRIX (https://www.idrix.fr) and that is based on TrueCrypt 7.1a."

    Thanked by 1netomx
  • https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/

    Took over from TrueCrypt

  • I use VeraCrypt as well. No issues whatsoever.

I came here loaded with a "Leave Windows long enough and it can crash by itself" response, but NOOOOOOooo.

If VeraCrypt is as good as TC, you damn well better archive what version you made it with along with your content. I can't remember which subrevision it was, but with my experience of 3.x images, 4.x bluescreen on every host it was tried on.

    Ciphershed is another option.

I was using it up until a few months ago when I got myself a new MacBook Pro. I can't get Truecrypt to install, it complains about requiring OS X 10.4+ despite being on 10.12.3.

That problem is well known and fortunately, trivial to fix:

eventually, truecrypt will have to be replaced. I remember using vmware server 2 with hacks on debian 6, but, eventually, had to use something else.
AFAIK there are no issues with veracrypt.

Just fyi: IDRIX (company behind veracrypt) is at least partially funded by french government...

  • +1 for Veracrypt, works great

@raindog308 Would you kindly fix the title?

Good, so not only the US Navy funds Tor, the french have their own pet project.

  • Ad Veracrypt: I personally don't use it but I seem to remember that it was analyzed and seemed to be not at all lousy quality.

Ad "French!": That is, in fact, positive. The french have, in diverse and sometimes weird alliances, e.g. with microsoft, done a lot of work in the field of safe software. Note that the approach angle is quite different from the us of a one; us of a is mostly targetting "secure" (as in crypto) while the french are mostly targetting "safe" (as in reliable, no leaks). Lots of microsofts finest research stuff comes from france.

    Would add Cryptomator, https://cryptomator.org

It's primarily intended for cloud encrypting, but nobody forces you to upload your encrypted folder.

It works perfect on Windows and Linux (both I have running) and runs on Mac, too.

You create a vault like with TC/Vera which you mount as a "webdav" drive, all done by the app.

It's a relatively new German project to meet the rising privacy concerns here and from my point of view a great replacement for encfs which is - as we all know - no longer recommendable for clouds.

I stoped using True Crypt after the hack was disclosed. Vera Crypt does everything I want and more.

This is not full-disk encryption. Not saying it's not useful, it caters to different threats.

  • True, but not everyone is aiming for full-disk-encryption.

If you just want to secure a bunch of files cryptomator will definitely be the better looking choice if Vera (which I' ve never tested) looks as ugly as TC :-)

TrueCrypt 7.1a is still safe to use. But of course, it's better to use an updated program like VeraCrypt.

IIRC, the hack was a privilege escalation attack in the driver but not a crypto break...i.e., you could use it to get admin on a windows box but not arbitrarily decrypt TC volumes. I could be wrong, but yeah, TC is rotting...

  • Just better to avoid unsupported software and use veracrypt, especially if you are recommending it to a person jumping in.
