To vps or not to vps

I am looking at connecting a half dozen sites to a single point for backup replication. I am looking at two options:

  1. Setup vps and openvpn to allow the backup repository to connect to the remote sites for backup replication
  2. Setup openvpn on the backup repository and allow remote client backup servers to connect back to it so they can replicate.

The benefit of #1 would be that I could change the replication point easily. Benefit of #2 would be not having to find a reliable vps that is cheap and has unlimited bandwidth.

Thoughts?
