meh... $7
Happy birthday, Google! And thank you for many answers for a difficult questions
Only 18? Seems like yesterday. OK, I admit it. I'm getting old.
Teenager google
Congrats Google! You're now of legal age ^_^
From innocent and idealistic child to all grown up evil overlord in such a short time. So much to be proud of
Anyone remember altavista? It's what what we used before google got popular.
And atlavista and every other possible misspelling
Here's the idea that got it started http://infolab.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html
Something that could be done nowadays on a $10/m server.
Never used it, Yahoo came out close then. Yahoo WAS better than google, until the screwed everything up with a million images and laggy content
<insert joke about being "old enough to drive" and self-driving cars here>
I remember altavista and lycos, but I used mostly yahoo. I also remember astalavista ;-) (for the olders a famous keygen search engine! Writing this and opened a new tab to see if it is still existing, and it is!
On Google's birthday, in the beginning I was happy seeing a new player to entering the game and changing the rules, but now even if I use it as all of us continously, I do not like the role and the influence having to the net... So much power in their hands, no real control from anybody outside the company...
Yeah, it'd be nice if there was something comparable to Google, because as you say, the amount of power is often underestimated.
cuil.com was the last attempt, and that failed spectacularly.
Gigablast is quite a good open source thing to get to grips with the challenges on the few billions of pages scale.
I stopped using Google services. Too much power in one private company. The only service I still keep using from Google is some email forwarding from an old offer that included free domain email accounts.
From simple search engine to paid advertising, from WebRTC promotion to RTMPS destruction, from free email to psychological profiles with search cookies and social networking... I can't really wish them happy birthday from the bottom of my heart.
You have to be 18 to drive there? All you get at 1 here is the ability to get drunk and sign your life away XD. Start driving at 15/16. Sex at 16. Spose they are legal for porn, but who wants to see Google naked?
Oh and the PITA of being legally obliged to vote in a system that does nothing anyway
