Using SoftLayer for an Low end VPS...

Is impossible...
OK so I called them, looking for something with a Quad Core CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 4x 1TB in RAID10.
For an E3-1270 with just 5TB Bandwidth @ 100Mbps they wanted like $600 then he "could make me a special deal" for $449.

Holy cow that is expensive, if I wanted 10TB of bandwidth it could cost an extra $250.
Sorry guys, I'm sticking to OVH.

  • There are PLENTY of other cheap dedi providers out there :p

  • These are the prices you will get from going direct with Softlayer. I suggest looking at a large reseller that can get much better deals from them.

100TB used to be great, but they charge an extra fee for the SL locations now.

Softlayer isn't cheap, this is pretty common knowledge...

  • @shovenose While many might argue but offering LEB from rented hardwares is a bad idea.

    Haha yes there are

Just chatted with 100TB didn't seem too helpful.

So take your business somewhere else ;)

Well, any recommendations on a good DC nobody would frown down upon that isn't a total ripoff?
What are your thoughts on Limestone networks?

Have you used them? I presume resume not.

They are a great DC and have a good network, exclude negativity from LEB/LET getting worked up.

  • I would advise against OVH. Buy a box & colocate it somewhere, PhoenixNAP, Ionity, Incero (although I think a few people have been having issues there lately?), Datashack, Choopa or Quadranet.

Can probably find better/cheaper than this, but something similar would do the job:

My first one of these gifs :P @Zen dedicated for you :)

    Oh you guys :)
Obviously when I have filled up two OVH VPS Nodes I will have enough revenue for some higher qualiy servers, but, for the time being I'm sticking to OVH. Better than average network, friendly and helpful support, and excellent pricing.

    Huh?

non existent support = friendly and helpful -- just don't ever need it!

    For good prices:
VolumeDrive (http://volumedrive.com/vdrive/?a=dedicated) - Not bad, good prices
Datashack (https://www.datashack.net/dedicated/) - Also good, good prices
RazorServers (http://www.razorservers.com/solutions/dedicated-servers/pricing/) - Havent tried them or read any reviews but also pretty good prices

I agree. OVH EU is known for it's bad (and non existent) support with bad replies. However, I've heard a few good things about the new OVH US' phone support. I'm not sure about their email support but they seem to be doing things better.

In regards to companies other than softlayer, I would take a look at the following:

100TB - used for a cloud server, were good
Datashack - used for a dedi, good prices, excellent
RazorServers - heard bad things about them, but good prices
    HostDime - excellent support
Dacentec - amazing support and service (comes out top for me)
Limestone Networks - amazing support (especially one of the techs!)
Interserver - good support and service.

The list goes on...as you can see there are a lot more ;)

Go with softlayer, just charge higher prices. Surviving on LEB plans alone isn't usually a good idea.

  • I would recommend Limestone Networks!
    Softlayer imo is waaaay overpriced.

You can get the same specifications at around $200 to $300.
Their staffs are friendly and their support is excellent as well (24/7/365, even on Christmas).

@dominicl I've had pretty good experiences with RazorServers. Look at the ending of those threads you where probably looking at.. They're mostly stupid clients.

Fair enough :P I've never used them personally, just seen the reviews. I've got nothing against them, but haven't used them before. I was thinking about it. Maybe I should ;)
