Now that Google Apps is no longer free, I'm searching for a new email option. I tried playing around with Postfix on a spare computer, and quickly learned that some email providers require reverse DNS to be setup before processing mail from you. I'm trying to learn away from hosting a mail server on my own machine because recently power has not been that reliable. Has anyone found an alternative that works, even if it costs? I thought about setting something up on a VPS, but I'm afraid that my VPS could be terminated at anytime, and all my emails disappear for good.

also https://www.zoho.com/mail/ Lite version see it in pricing tab. :)

Though I havent used any mail server provider till date :( .

  • @MikeIn I have tried the Windows Live option. For some reason I could never get email services activated for my domain. I sent multiple emails on to support without any luck getting anything going.

Nice for communities but a horror for a serious business...

  • Set up a mail server on a VPS, set it to back up regularly, and send outbound emails through Mandrill/SendGrid.

    Linux Easy-Setup Mail Servers

Outbound Mail Services (so you don't have to battle with spam filters blocking your email)

    Good luck!

  • @ElliotJ That sounds like a great idea, but how do you backup your VPS? I currently have a VPS over at RamNode and one over at Digital Ocean. Digital Ocean has there own backup feature, but for any other VPS how do you back it up?

  • Let me know if you need help. I have my own mail server running on a Linode VPS.

My backups go to Amazon S3.

    Overkill?

I have iredmail running on a 256mb VPS, probably can run it on 64mb. It works great and I rsync it to our small back up server but you could also back it up to Dropbox using this:

    DigitalOcean :) is great!
Just pick up a low cost VPS and turn it into a mail server, that's what I know at least two of our customers do.

  • @sdotsen I think I could use a little help, if you could. What mail server are you using and how are you backing up to Amazon S3? Thanks!

  • @shovenose I'm thinking of doing just that. What mail server are your clients using, if you don't mind sharing?

They asked me how to do it, I simply told them to install zPanel
I have a quick guide on how to do it:
    http://bettervps.com/zpanel/

  • @Patrick I have heard of iRedmail, if my memory serves me right, the free version does not allow for alias addresses. This would be a problem for me.

  • @shovenose zPanel, looks okay except for the possible security holes. A few weeks ago I read a thread where someone had discovered that the info.php page seen in the zPanel console is available to the public just by browsing to it.

zPanel isn't perfect, but it makes setting up really simple web servers and mail servers fast and easy for clients that aren't super great at server management but still bought an unmanaged server.

  • Has anyone had any luck with the ISPmail tutorial located at http://workaround.org/ispmail/squeeze? I might give it a try. I would like to run Zimbra, but I know it requires a lot of memory. Has anyone had any success with Zimbra on a VPS without breaking the bank? (I'm looking to spend a max around $10 per month)

@Patrick It also servers my test bed for development. I have apache among other things running on it. I'm sure it would run just fine on 512MB or less if I didnt have a bunch of other apps running on it.

    Same Here! :/

They have russian sign up, but once you are in with google translate they naively translate on their website.

I personally use Constant.com's S3-esque storage with s3cmd, however I have used dropbox in the past.
You can run dropbox in the background and create a symbolic link to the email directory. That way, it'll always be 100% up to date.

  • Duplicity is like rsync on steriods. It has built-in support to send backup files to S3. You can/should encrypt backups using a GPG key, then send it into an S3 bucket. I use it for my VPS and spend less than $1 to backup roughly 10G.

Duplicity is doing my personal backups to a Fusioned storage vps (@George_Fusioned), every day. Superb piece of software!

    Fusioned storage vps?

  • Windows live domains works ok but has several limitations that Google Apps doesn't. No catch-all email address and having to use the API to add aliases seem to be the worst of it.

  • For less than $1/month you could outsource it to http://www.codero.com/small-business-services/email-hosting/

I may do this at some point but I like hosting my own email. :-)

  • Looks like hasn't been updated since 2009 but looks pretty good:
