Need a remote windows desktop with limited resources for a year
Hi everyone,
Well I am a Linux user and time to time I find myself in need of Windows desktop.
1) I do not need much. Just a browser to read social media, run some github apps such as, converting old windows only formats.
2) Limited resources are fine. Probably I will need 600-700 mb for browser cache and ram enough to run windows is perfect. Even 1mbit connection is also ok.

Do you have a budget?
Buy an Intel atom netbook (or any machine to your spec, netbooks are around £30-50) buy a €3/yr LowEndSpirit and setup a VPN on it connect your machine to it and enable RDP for remote access.
Hi there mate.
Most of the websites are blocked here. So, good to have RDP access from somewhere else. At least I can read and listen others.
I surely have budget but it is not that big.
To achieve that why not just run Windows on your local Linux system under say KVM, XEN or Virtualbox?
Edit: Ah my question answered above

Windows is going to cost you, unfortunately.
You may get it cheaper is you can survive on a 180 eval license.
What's the budget and preferred location?
The VPN would work around that assuming you're not in China?
And no worries it's just a thought if it would work out. If you have any old laptops or desktops that work. Install Windows 7 on (can get licenses off eBay for like $10) and then the LES it would be a lot cheaper
For a minimal performance, you would need at least 756 Mem.
You can try those (checked and are still valid):

https://gbservers.co.uk/clients/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0
https://virmach.com/manage/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0
Also, you can rent a ready box accessee directly with rdp, like:
https://webpundits.in/buy-cheap-rdp/
(not tested any of all of those, not affiliated in any way with any of them. Used in the past alpharack for normal linux vps and was fine)
Now, if you are going to own license (a grey area even if a normal windows is used not as a server but for personal usage in just a remote location), you could rent a cheap dedicated server (there are 6$ atoms from mimsufi/ovh or 9$ dual core from quadix), install there proxmox and create a big vps with your windows there.
If you can take this approach, I would suggest to use anydesk instead normal rdp, it is much more faster, free and the feeling is like you are really in front of a local pc.
Virtualbox, windows, vpn. Ez
Check out BuyVM's KVM slices, they come with a Windows Server license: www.buyvm.net

Thank you for helping guys.
I am checking all the opportunities at the moment. So I should spare 6$ to 12$ to have stable windows server.

Thanks, hugh
Read the thread!
That should be plenty. As has been mentioned, BuyVM do KVM plans with Windows licenses included. I've not used their latest KVM slices, but I imagine they're probably decent.
My personal recommendation is Inception Hosting's XEN HVM plans, which come with a 180 eval license.
I did? Not sure what the issue is. He even said he was anticipating $6-12.
I apologize if I'm overlooking something.
Thanks, hugh
I don't think anyone would pay $12/mo for a 1mbit connection.
Why dont you take ubuntu with remote desktop or vnc if your purpose is just reading stuff and for windows application you can use wine. Try DO or Vultr with hourly billing to see if things work out. If yes then come back and look for ubuntu based vps else ..
SafeCloudHouse $3/m https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/89201/national-day-sale-kvm-ssd-la-washington-frankfurt-and-singapore/p1
BuyVM $3.5/m https://my.frantech.ca/cart.php?gid=37
VirMach $4/m https://lowendbox.com/blog/virmach-ssd-openvz-kvm-in-8-locations-starting-at-2month/
They're excellent, jerk

Can you run Wine on Linux to run the Windows applications you require? If so, will a cheap Linux VPS with Wine installed work for you?
Doesn't wine still eat 99% CPU running calc?
Francisco
It's getting better but still ...
You better install virtualbox and give it all resources and then install Windows inside the linux vps
Thats how you can get windows server with arubacloud they give you 1gb ram vps for 1 euro only
Hello,
Our first vm with windows starts @10$/mo but it is hourly billed, if it is for browsing purpose you can shut it down while not using it so you will only pay à part of that 10$.

I don't have much real-world experience running Wine, so you are probably 100% right. I have one Mac application that is wrapped around Wine so that the vendor could have a Mac-compatible version of their software. It is one of the worst applications that I have ever seen, but it does not consume much CPU.
I feel like I'm invisible
I suggest therapy.
I didn't realize that you offer free windows license with those cheap kvm boxes or even the price of those E3 vps! Nice (and tempting, I ... must ... resist ... ) ... ... ...
Give into the pony.
