should I someone root access to vps?
I got a freelancer to give me a way to backup my various vps so if there is a problem I can easily restore. (I couldn't find a tutorial to learn how to do it myself)
now he wants access to my vps so he can determine how he's going to setup the backup.
I knew he needed access, but now I'm afraid to give out my usernames and passwords.
what do you suggest?

I would never give anyone root access to anyone other than myself.
Tell him to provide you with instructions for you to do?
Setup teamviwer?
Create him a special user and only let him use certain commands.
@TAZ teamviewer looks good, I would have to see how that works
I will tell him the os and have him tell me what to do. I really don't want him to have any access to server

It's not hard to create an unprivileged user, also the content you want backed up should already be owned by a unprivileged user (ie: I wouldn't run web, php, mysql, etc processes with root credentials).
can someone create a backdoor entrance as an unprivileged user? is a vps with programmed for a leb I want to also backup the os and the customizations incase the vps fails.

It's certainly possible.
It creates more work for the freelancer - which you'll have to pay for. It also does nothing to establish a relationship of trust.
