Intel® Core™ i7-4770 cpu benchmark is higher than Intel Xeon E3-1245V2
If you need a good graphic processing, go with i7
I guess e3 is more power efficient than i7 edit: after a google search. Yes !
How about server performance?
Never used a i# in a production environment. But e3 gives me a dirty pleasure to work with. So my view on comparing performance it utterly useless.
On a side note, i7 one is fairly new and e3 is discontinued a while back. So you may get few newer extensions with i7
Would you use ECC memory on the E3 ? thats its one benefit over the i7.
What you using it for?
yes ECC memory is supported
Shared hosting
Then go with e3.
+1 e3 , performance & reliablity
they are basically identical, using cpubenchmark is useless it's not reliable at all.
For more accurate you can look at geekbench
E3: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/search?utf8=✓&q=E3-1245+v2
i7: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/search?q=i7-4770
the i7 has a edge of about 5% on single threaded tasks.
which do you suggest i go for? i7 or e3
for what you are using it for either one both will perform just as good. i would only choose the i7 in this case for the likes of game servers
E3, just coz it supports ECC memory.
Go with E3 as others have mentioned.
For shared hosting - definitely E3 only. It is server hardware designed to work 24/7, also supports ECC RAM and it is very important. i7 is a desktop hardware, not for business.
It's much better Intel Xeon processor for web hosting related stuff.
The i7 will be useful in a "Business" environment if you plan on hosting game servers (Minecraft/CS:GO ...)
Otherwise we totally agree that the Xeon is by far better for stability and reliability
You care for your data, you want ECC.
Go with with E3 for better performance
I have one server with i7 4930 and gives bad performance than any older E5 processor for example E3 1270 v3 on load.
On idle it may show good results but after some real use you will notice the big difference.
Xeon processors are optimized to work in server environement if you need to make a choice and are planning to provide hosting services i advise you to go for the xeon.
