Hi i am planning to buy a dedicated server for video encoding process, i have three choices of processors Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge Or Core i7-2600 Sandy Bridge or Xeon E3-1230, which according to you is better for my usage?? the cost is coming almost same for both of them so cost is not a problem in this case.

If your doing video encoding you best go with the i7 as the Xeon doesn't support any kind of native video. Although the Xeon does support ECC ram. Why the i7 doesn't.

I would go with the I7 and make sure I pick my apps that support Intel Clear Video respectively.

If the apps don't support it go with the Xeon.

No, it's not. The Ivy would offer the best performance out of these 3. Unless you can get the 2600 seriously cheap, I'd get the 3770.

GPU in 3770 is one generation ahead of the 2600 but a few Mhz slower - According to Moores law it should be still at least 1.25 times faster. CPU wise the 3770 benches in higher (9374 instead of 8270).

If you pay 25% or more less for the 2600 it's a better deal, else the 3770 is the best deal.

    The Xeon has no GPU.

    3770 > 2600 > 1230

Both numerically and in terms of the CPU options.

What happens to that order when a 1245 is added to the array?

  • Intel Core i7-3770 9374

    Intel Core i7-2600 8270

    Intel Xeon E3-1245 8047

    Intel Xeon E3-1230 8031

Not sure about other tasks, but I tried them both, for encoding i7-2600 is better than E3 1230. And of course, 3770 is better choice

    v1 @ 3.3GHz - 8 047

    v2 @ 3.4GHz - 9 089

    v3 @ 3.4GHz - 9 516

I personally use the v2 in one of my dedi's and its performance is excellent.

  • We have had issues with Intel Core i7-3770 running cPanel+CentOS as it would hang etc.
But for other Encoding Purposes with Windows is fantastic.

  • You should definitely consider the i7-4770. I have had much better success with it than the i7-3770, with which I had problems on some motherboards. If, before buying, you want to rent one, you might consider Hetzner.de @ EUR41.18/month (+EUR41.18 setup). They also currently offer the i7-3770 on their server auction from about EUR25/month w/o setup.

i7-3770 for encoding, better than the i7-2600, and much better than the e3-1230.. also better than an e3-1245 v3, or an e3-1270 v3 for that matter.

the passmark benchmark scores don't utilize turbo, up to 3.9GHz for the i7-3770

i'm not sure why you'd need onboard graphics, either.

Encoding videos makes use of the onboard GPU and provides much faster speed this way.

Does it use the CPU heavily too, or mostly the GPU matters? There might be smaller / cheaper CPUs with the same or better GPU.

Better encoding with CPU, GPU not make even faster

  • Hi,

In firstheberg we use the i7 3770 to our 32 Go configuration and this processor is really performing.
In fact we have 2 or 3 customers using the i7 3930k to encoding but that's not the same chipset and the same price..

  • I7-3770 - i7-2600- E3-1245 in same price Minimum 32 GB RAM 2x3 TB SATA HDD
Verry low price And best E3-1245 is recommended

I'd like to bump this thread and re-ask the question (with RAM to consider):

    Same price

    • i7-2600, 32GB Ram, 2x3 TB SATA
    • i7-3770, 16GB Ram, 2x3 TB SATA

Is the performance advantage of the i7-3770 worth the 16GB less ram? Usage is hosting ownCloud and some smaller sites.

Oh and I could also get the i7-3770 with 32GB Ram and 2x3TB but the price would be ~5€ higher.

    Greetings

    @frk

If you prefer more RAM over CPU performance go with the i7-2600, if you prefer CPU performance over more RAM go with the i7-3770. The choice really depends on what you intend to use it for. Since it's for ownCloud the storage on both is the same.

If you want the best of both worlds and can justify the extra 5€, get that.

  • Its actually just 5€ difference (I misread) so I will probably go with that deal. Thanks anyways! :)

  • A friend of mine fiddled with videos and told me he made use of the 5960X and work like a charm. I know that's not in the list and that is not cheap...

  • i7-6700 is available on hetzner with 64GB memory, why not use that? its latest CPU and very good. I think others can comment about its graphics power more.``

  • Yes but you have to pay additional setup fees then. The "old" generation is cheaper (per month) and no setup fees.
