And that has a reason: ICQ has a solvent and reliable (in terms of economic reliability) owner.
I use IRC with all of my good friends who know how to use IRC. For everyone else I use whatever is most convenient for them which usually means Google Talk, Steam, or Skype.

For what it's worth, both Google Talk and Facebook Chat are XMPP-based and should work in Pidgin or other XMPP-supporting clients.
According to a fairly recent presentation about Facebook deployment, they use IRC for release coordination and BitTorrent to deploy the binaries across their servers.
