It would not be "extremely" insecure since you used encrypted transit. It's unencrypted at the remote end, though. Depending on what level of security you need, it may be Ok.

In any case, stick with things people have tried and reported to work. Some exclusions under "/" which make perfect sense are listed on the page below:

If you use duply, you can transfer a PGP encrypted tar.gz container to the remote server using a variety of protocols, including SCP and SFTP (take a look here: http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/1289735/#Comment_1289735).
If you are doing that way, with strong keys for encryption and a encrypted stream to transfer you should be considerably safe if you trust your storage.
I would say 7 of 10, 8 of 10 if your remote destination has an encrypted filesystem.
