  • A webproxy does not work, you really need a VPN. Blegh. Will install one on my US VPS this weekend. Must...get...free..unlimited...backup..space.

@Freek Web proxy worked for me, it was my own CGI Proxy though.

Just installed the client on my smaller home storage server (400GB of documents), configured it, and it's started backing up. Going to leave it overnight and monitor the network in the morning so see how it's doing.

The app is pretty configurable, you can set when you want backups deleted btw. And you can also store changes of files, so you can keep multiple versions of documents.

This seems pretty awesome, might buy the 5 pc plan for $50/yr if it's decent.

Can they wipe your data if they wanted to?

@KuJoe said: You can set the CPU limits in the application (I set the max to 80% and it never went over that from what I saw).

The CPU load itself is not the problem, the problem is: it backed up roughly at the same speed all along, but the CPU load used to do that seems to increase (was 30% CPU to backup at 5 Mbit, now 80% CPU to backup at 5 Mbit).
If I put in a CPU limit now, then the upload speed falls off sharply, which is not what I want. And the limit isn't all that needed anyway, as the backup thread runs at "nice +19".
What I'm concerned about is: as the backup approaches 1-2 TB, if this app indeed doesn't scale its operations well, it will hit 100% CPU, and the upload speed will start to suffer even without CPU limits, just because there will be not enough CPU power to feed it.

@Ree said: Have you had a look at the data de-duplication setting? I remember seeing some tests performed awhile ago that indicated this was both a throughput killer and a bit of a cpu hog. So I'd try changing to Minimal (can't turn off unfortunately) to see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, I've seen that article, mine is already set to Minimal (and compression to off).

Tried several types of webproxies (glype, php, cgi) but I can't press the download button. It stays greyed out?

I did not notice this when I reached the 1TB mark, stayed at 80% the whole way pretty much but my connection was bouncing between 5Mbps and 30Mbps.

Probably because we have good computers. Livedrive does the same. once you used quite abit it takes longer. They said it was something to do with file checks when i asked.

And mine dont go past 3Mbps :(

It was running on a 256MB OpenVZ VPS with 1/2 a CPU core. I have since upgraded it to 1GB of RAM and a full CPU core (I don't think the RAM is needed but I forgot to change it back). :)

    Ahh well then strange :(

  • $49/y after a year?
Worth to use this server or not? Any concerns?

  • @jarland said: Oh well they can watch 2TB of church camp videos if they want ;)

I am running this on an OK computer too, not a VPS.
    AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250 Processor
    cpu MHz : 3000.000

They also offer a better deal at $140 for 4 years.
And if you decide to cancel any time during 4 years, you get full refund for the remaining time.

    Yes.

If you have JavaScript disabled, it's not going to work.

I made a typo. I mean I had Javascript enabled and Adblock disabled, but DanielM signed me up :)

  • @Freek Do you have any US based boxes? Just install squid quickly and use that.

Jarland how much did you managed to store?

  • jarjar Patron Provider, Top Host, Veteran

Uploading about 600gb. I another full 750gb external if I can find it. It's got about 3 years of footage on it.

  • I am uploading at 200kpbs rate
