This and futurama characters for me. Sometimes the provider name/acronym in there as well.

  • root@root

  • Usually the location and a number.

  • GoT characters as hostnames. You can find those and further inspiration at NamingSchemes.com. Also, if you have a lot of servers, you can do something like that - choose whatever you want as a hostname and then create CNAMEs like web01.fra.de.example.com or whatever floats your boat.

    Beef curtains isn't preforming well.

    Minge is overloaded

  • Always three letter nicknames that stand for something memorable. For example my main home machine has always been called Scorodonius (my favourite Marasmius) so its hostname is SCO. Another is CFE or "computer from Ed". An obvious one is RPI.

    whattheserverdoes(serverno).country.domain.net

So my us proxmox server is proxmox1.usa.domain.net

  • (public) hostname is the UN-locode for the server location, with its (internal) short form using female given names derived from the state/province.

E.g. a server in Los Angeles, CA, USA (us-lax.domain.tld) with "Callie" for internal hostname; a server in Rotterdam, South Holland, NL (nl-rtm.domain.tld) listed internally as Holly, and so on.

Obviously works for a limited number of geographically distant servers.
