xbmc over vps?

proxieproxie Member

Hi,

I'm new to this so sorry if it's been asked a lot...

Can you install xbmc with all the movie stream adding etc on a vps and play the content directly to your pc, phone etc?

So that way it's streaming the movie from my Vps.

Or anything similar?

Thanks,
Anthony

    You can use Plex.
It works but it is a resource hog.

Other than that, with a VPN connection DLNA apps work as well.

Only if you have transcoding turn on..

and a crappy CPU.. although plex now supports alot of Direct Play files.

You will need a big storage VPS for all the 1080p movies. Not worth it. Just use 64gb SD card.

Sure, you can disable transcoding if you move the transcoder.
But then along with the Web interface, Android doesn't play files either.

  • I have not been able to play xvid files through plex. And doing a google search provides no help to installing the xvid codec for ubuntu

    Hi,
XBMC (now Kodi) allready brings all the codecs you need for the playback on your devices.

You can add your movies via FTP, Samba, NFS, HTTP etc. which you can save on your VPS when you have enough space.

  • How can i setup Kodi on my kimsufi server and have web acces to it?

I use it this way. Works a treat. Combines well my 3rd party seedbox ;)

Install Kodi on local machine and use vps as remote storage

  • Try Emby on the server, then Kodi with the emby plugin on the clients.

You should be able to direct play on supported devices that have the xvid codec.
