Comparision with 5420 I'd say 1230 is better.
The 5420 is Dual and 1230 has one processor. Do you think this will effect the performance?
Depends on your use. The E3 has faster per core processing than the L5420. If you are not going run any CPU intensive or multi-threaded application, the E3 is a better option. You also get faster RAM and new chipset with the E3.
Even though 5420 has dual processor I would say go with E3 you will benefit from DDR3 RAM.
My customers mostly have wordpress installed.
5420's are too old.
Better speed with 1230
Do you have ssd option?that would be good to host multiple cpanel account.
Go with the E3-1230
The L5420 is still used but its pretty old now. And as others have said, you get the faster RAM with the E3-1230. The faster core processing will be more beneficial.
Btw I think you opened this in terms of getting a server from quadix , just providing heads up they're out of stock on E3s

I would go for the Intel Xeon E3
