Look into bare metal backups?
Also there is clonezilla, but I end up using TAR (even if it doesn't do imaging): super easy, fast and reliable
Then I'll just use gpgme and upload it to the cloud.
i use attic https://github.com/jborg/attic/
it has some nice features like data deduplication which keeps your backup storage small. as a disaster recovery it can fuse mount your backup and you can copy the files to your harddrive.
Could always virtualise your system, makes backing up easier. I'm not sure if dd can dump a disk whilst its in use on a non virtualised system. Maybe somebody knows?
But painfully slow!
