Mixing ECC (Unbuffered / Non-REG) and Non-ECC?

Hi Guys...

I want to know whether I can mix unbuffered ECC (non-registered ECC) RAM with Non-ECC RAM...

Did anyone try this? Can they work together?

Thanks!

    No,you cannot

  • I wonder why a provider is asking this question, time to add to my Do Not Trust provider list.

    No, you cannot mix.

You can run most ECC supporting CPUs on non ECC though (eg. E3s) and some devices eat nearly anything (Mac Pro 4,1/5,1 - DDR3 reg, DDR3 unbuffered, DDR3 non ECC, DDR3L, DDR3 LRDIMM...)

Crucial in addition to CPU is also chipset support, AMD CPUs+Chipsets are generally more into ECC than intel which limits to mostly Xeons, i3 and some exceptions (eg. Avoton Atoms).

The quickest way to get an authoritative answer is to just look at the motherboard manual which you should have handy already. But if you don't it's a quick Google for even very old boards.
