VNC+LXDE is easy and lightweight.
See: http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/(ve):Install_VNC_on_Ubuntu
For what you are trying to do, you could do so without running a desktop enviroment & VNC on your VPS, by using X11-Forwarding over SSH
If you are running linux on your PC, you can simply use the
-X
flag withssh
to enable X11-Forwarding; If you are on Windows and using PuTTY, you will need to install Xming, and enable X11-Forwarding in PuTTY's configuration options. You of course also need to make sure you don't have X11-Forwarding disabled in your
/etc/ssh/sshd_config
Then when you get your SSH shell open, you can just start a web browser from the command line, and its window will magically appear on your local desktop
@Juro: wow that sounds so good. I'll test it. Can i contact you later if it didn't work?
Thanks a lot
@fan: Thanks for the link!
Hmm...what browser to install?
@Kilwa : Chromium (Compile it or RPM) or Chrome (RPM) or FireFox (Simple install apt-get install firefox)
Can't you just tunnel with putty? browsing with X11-Forwarding was kinda slow for me...
Kilwa....
NXMachine (VNC) + XFCE (GUI) + Iceweasel (BROWSER) and you're set!
thanks for this
NX != VNC. IMO NX is better than VNC, it runs via SSH.
You are 100% spot on, but for the sake of not having to explain it and everyone I have shown it to just goes "oh so it's VNC" I thought I would let it slide for now.
Since using NoMachine/NX I have never really wanted to use VNC. NX is faster on all counts, and if you want multiple sessions it shines well ahead.
I'm thinking about trying x2go (http://www.x2go.org) I heard it's faster, uses less bandwidth, can resume session on different device, and other cool features. Has anyone tried?
Not tried yet, but kinda curious after googling it! Would like to try it myself too.
