  • Oliver said: Does anyone know if these have iLO advanced cards in them? And where to get cheap rails?

All of them have ILO advanced - only the license key decides if you get basic or advanced.

Illegal but noting for completion: there is a keygen up to ILO4 (latest) and the keys are not server verified.

These most likely come with only a basic license as the former owner purges the DC wide license (single key mostly).

  • Can you recommend any good components sellers like HDD/router/ram in NL and RU

  • DXD said: Can you recommend any good components sellers like HDD/router/ram in NL and RU

No such thing for RU - RU buys all in DE/NL etc. and ship "semi legal" to Russia then. RU prices are insane.

For NL... ebay mostly as it is EU. For switches/routers especially cisco i have some refurb companies - pm me if you want the contacts.

@BrianHarrison - where? Post full list, quantity, location, etc.

It'll take me some time to inventory everything and I'm a bit swamped with work today, but if anyone's interested feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll make sure to follow up.

I'm intrigued now considering most encoding we do is just simple x264->x264 (eg. BluRay to MKV container with x264 or 1080p MKV w/ x264 -> 720p x264 in MP4/MKV) - what speeds up more, cores or single core clock speed?

Do you have something to test that? Encode the same file and measure time? With disabled HW encoding to force only x86-64 instruction set usage if any other HW modules are present?

I would like to run it on a X5694 (2 cores at 4.4Ghz each base, no turbo but can be enabled to 4.9Ghz) and a E7 system (4 CPUs @ 10 cores + HT, so 40 cores/80 threads at 2.4 Ghz base and 2.8Ghz turbo, E7-4870 - ironically named like a GPU i once had that also generated a lot of heat lol)

As reference, on my Mac Pro 5.1 (2 X5675 @ 3.06Ghz, 12 cores + 12 HT, bench ~13k) i saw not much difference to my former 4.1 (1x W3680 @ 3.33Ghz, 6 cores + 6 HT, bench ~9.3k) within x264 1080p to x264 720p in Handbrake (not sure what backend encoder it uses but it does multi core).

This is gonna be pretty off topic, but basically -- decoding I usually use hardware decoding, so these 2 have no difference for me whatsoever. And for x264, overall performance matters until you reach about 16 threads, from then on it cannot effectively use multi-threading. x265 is doing much better at threading, and can easily goes up to 20+ threads but you'll soon hit the point too. I'm currently doing 4k encoding from HEVC Main10 to HEVC Main10, which is going to take me 1 day per video (of 24 minutes) on my i7-4770, when the dual E5 becomes pretty tempting.

We have a bunch of retired Supermicro half-depth servers running Intel Xeon L5420s with anywhere from 8GB to 24GB of RAM.

If anyone is interested, we'd be willing to sell them for $20 each plus the cost of shipping.

i would like 5, what's the shipping cost to 78040?

    thanks

I wish there were cheap deals for decent SM servers in ebay Europe.

You can take a look at http://www.serverhome.nl
I never dealt with them before, but they look legit. I don't think they have an English website, so I can translate for you if needed.

  • Got $250-$300 here needing some old servers shipping to Dallas what can anyone do?

  • I can also recommend serverhome.nl. Just picked up there some rails while I was traveling between two datacenters for a colo-move.

Hate servers on ebay that doesn't include rails.
