dnstop - no output file

I have an OpenVZ VPS running bind9 and use dnstop to monitor what the queries and responses are. What I would like to do is save that to a file. Cut/paste doesn't work. And it is supposed to save to a file according to the man page, but the file is always empty.

command used
dnstop -Q venet0:0
and that works. Doing this does not save to a file.
dnstop -Q venet0:0 savefile.txt
saves nothing. Nor does this:
dnstop -Q venet0:0 > savefile.txt

What am I doing wrong?

  • No answer yet, and for a good reason.

It seems that I misunderstood the function of dnstop. One has to save a file with something like tcpdump, and then dnstop can read that. It does not save files itself. I misunderstood the man page. In case somebody else finds this via Google or something, here is how it works.

    tcpdump -w dump.pcap -c 1000 port 53

then you can read that file like this

    dnstop dump.pcap
