Looking for inexpensive tower colo.

edited October 2016 in Requests

Since I'm getting some bandwidth issues with plex from my WHI dedi, I don't want to use Joe's Datacenter (housed in same building in Kansas City I've read), but those rates are nice and I don't see any other websites that mention they will colo a mid-tower form factor (not rack mount).

  • This would be a storage box and plex server, and host a few random web projects i'm developing.
  • Won't ever use more than 5TB/month transfer. Probably closer to 2TB.
  • 100mbit bandwidth would be enough.
  • /29 network would be nice for my VMs.
  • West coast (closer to me) preferred.

Does anyone have thoughts or recommendations on providers that can work with a student's budget?

Joe's Datacenter is in the same building as WSI but they have separate networks to my knowledge. When WSI is down Joe's is still up and vice-versa.

  • Not a million miles away but a big recommendation to ColoStore.com in South Bend.

Just tell them where you're coming from and they'll most likely match the pricing for towers.

Joe's (JDC) and Wholesaleinternet/Datashack (WSI/Nocix) used to be in the same building in Kansas City (different floors) if i remember correctly JDC even started as a colo customer of WSI, but JDC has used its own building for a few years now and WSI also moved out of that building and have their own building in North Kansas City.

    WSI - https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1378157,-94.5788625,3a,75y,127.13h,91.49t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sTOwwpo1KvnVDuHcRXqmZfw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 - North Kansas City

Also JDC is multihomed using HE.net and Cogent over both IPv4 and IPv6, WSI is singlehomed HE.net over IPv4 and IPv6.

They both do have peering at KCIX (Run by WSI) but both just have a 1Gbit/s link there.

So if you have problems with WSI it might be because they only have he.net as bandwidth transit and Joe's also have Cogent.

Singlehomed HE is... eh. HE+Cogent is surely not optimal but a minimum requirement i guess... HE does still not have a route to Cogent IPv6 as far as i am aware....

    Joe's :
325 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO 64106

wsi according to this website they have 2 locations. It might be true but according to Aaron W , wsi they no longer have their own facility but provide network + staff to datashack/ nocix.

EDIT: did not read the whole post ...

I believe that still is true, so if you for example do use "a lot" of ipv6 traffic you do not want to be singlehomed to he.net and/or cogent as they have no direct route to eachother.

But @slavetothesound if you found a good deal with Joe's you could try them out for a month, as the cogent transit joe's has that wsi does not might be better for your traffic needs.

edit: I forgot you wanted to colo and if you live far away it might actually end up being a lot of work and money involved to colo just for one month, i guess you could sign up for one of their cheap dedis and try the network out, if its good you could colo.

You could open a sales ticket with them explaining all this and they might be able to work something out for you.
