DNS Providers - Let's make a list (in light of recent DDOS)

Quick read: https://medium.com/@brianarmstrong/youre-probably-doing-dns-wrong-like-we-were-6625efaed390#.1j1v4of05

For me, I like providers who have an API, and prefer ones that price on DNS zones rather than queries. How about knocking together a list?

  • Afraid.org
    -- No API
    -- Free

  • Aurora DNS
    -- Has an API
    -- Charges on zone

  • Cloudflare
    -- Has an API
-- Charges on zone, free tier

  • CloudNS
    -- Has an API
    -- Charges per zone

  • dns.he.net
    -- No API
    -- Free

  • DNS Made Easy
    -- Has an API
    -- Charges on zone

  • Google Cloud DNS
    -- Has an API
-- Charges on query volume, zone

  • Microsoft Azure
    -- Has an API
-- Charges on query volume, zone

  • NS1
    -- Has an API
-- Charges on query volume, zone, has a free tier

  • Rage4
    -- Has an API
    -- Charges on zone

  • Route53
    -- Has an API
-- Charges on query volume, zone

Route53 also has a per zone fee.

    @gbshouse 's Rage4 is pretty neat.

I also use http://dns.he.net for some zones.

  • NS1 has API's but it charges based on both volume and zones -- it has an free tier ;)

Azure Microsoft -- charges based on zone's and volume of DNS queries

Dns made Simple -- Has API access only for Business account

freedns.afraid.org -- No Api but free and great host in my books

ydns.io -- free has an API

dns4.pro -- Has an API --free

Really looking for established providers with a track history and presence, but thanks.

I have something like 50+ sites on Cloudflare just using their free DNS, works great and I rarely have any issues.

Rage4 charges on zone not query

  • Constellix (DNSMadeEasy sub brand thing?). Still in beta so free, but rather... variable and precise pricing for when it launches.

  • cloudns has been good for me so far as a replacement for rage, and a lot cheaper

Google Cloud DNS (has API as well as control panel). My new favorite - moved all my stuff over from Route53 DNS, cutting cost by almost 50% (per hosted domain is half the price).

We have a PowerDNS cluster available for free for customers on request, even without any products. Is that also allowed on the list? It has an API as well.

+1 I have all my domains on CF .. perhaps no longer such a good idea to use a single DNS provider given what happened to Dyn on Friday ..

any recommendations for a backup DNS provider who supports DNSSEC?

  • rackspace dns has api and it's free.

  • Zilore seems promising.

  • Duh, just started writing my own DNS cluster. This gives me a thought if DDoS Mitigation is necessary on my nodes...

  • Zilore it's free

  • Zilore +1, it has fantastic features and as of now it is free, support replies are fast and accurate. I had transferred all my domains from cloudns to zilore

  • If anyone is offering an API on their private clusters, it would make a lot of sense to clone the API(or a subset) of the big dns providers' APIs.

There's plenty of third party library support for the established ones like Dnsmadeeasy.

Just change an end point URI and GO GO when you want to switch. :)

  • I tried a lot of dns providers but nowadays we're only using our own cluster and cloudflare when needed. It's not that hard to maintain and gives one hell lot of flexibility. Never encountered a single dns issue since we started with PowerDns a couple of years ago. Less likely to get attacked as well.

Please also note, if they support IPv6, Secondary DNS, DNSSEC (full support or only as Secondary DNS), and in which country the provider is based.

I'd also recommend Rackspace. It's intended for users who pay for other services but I've never heard of anyone having issues with this; "intended" is their own language so the all-clear to take advantage of them is there :-) Signing up for an account (affil.|non-affil.) requires a credit card & a call from them for verification.

No limits on zones or number of records or queries. No support for acting as a slave/master server through [A|I]XFR but with API you could make some frankenstein solution. No IPv6 addresses for their nameservers (dns[1,2].stabletransit.com|ns[2].rackspace.com) but of course they support AAAA records. No DNSSEC. Supports "vanity" nameservers & removal of Rackspace's NS entries except for the SOA record -- the SOA email can be changed, though.

  • Thanks for the time and suggestions.

As a side benefit, I found out that Cloudflare doesn't honour 'ANY' DNS requests (I gather DNS records for a separate project).

I won't be able to edit the OP in a few hours but if the list gets considerably bigger, I'll make a new thread.

Our DNS service costs 10€/year with no limit of requests or domains, cPanel interface + API, hosted in 4 different locations in Spain, dual stack IPv4 / IPv6, and DDoS protected via Voxility. You can order here: https://ginernet.com/cart.php?a=add&pid=121

Do you support DNSSEC at least as secondary?
