asn question

Requesting an ASN from arin without owning your own IP block how does that work? Do I need to rent a /24 and then submit it to arin before I receive an ASN? I'm just trying to figure out how it works because I plan on renting a /24 for about a year and need an asn.

you need to tell them at least 1x routable space you'll be announcing using this ASN to motivate that you really need it.

Alright so I need to start leasing a /24 before requesting an ASN.

    or a /48 IPv6.

  • You will also need to provide them with an agreement with your provider regarding IP announcement, network connectivity etc...

    Thanks for the help.

  • You're very welcome! Good luck with obtaining the ASN :-)

  • Why do you need an ASN, are you going to be peering with multiple upstreams?

  • Why not just have the leased IP space announced on someone else's ASN? That way you don't have to worry about ARIN or bandwidth.

    Yes

Why use someone else's when I can have my own, I don't mind the headache of ARIN or the bandwidth.

  • Because you don't own the IPs anyway. If you owned the space, definitely get an ASN too. But leased IPs on an owned ASN in the ARIN region seems...bleh.

Its a start. If you plan on buying IP then you have to get approved first from Arin. To get approved you either need to be leasing your IP which will be cheaper a lot of times than getting them from your up line provider.

    Yes

When you have signed the agreements with your upstreams in-hand, you can the request the ASN. I'm not exactly sure how they are dealing with leased IP allocations in relation to ASN requests, but ARIN should be able to guide you.

The process is pretty clearly laid-out on their website.
