When a provider moves and reprovisions your service

I'm curious how people feel about providers suddenly (sometimes with less than 24 hour notice) that they are moving your service (i.e. VM) from network to another, often times hundreds of miles away and almost always to a new address allocation. Personally I find this slightly annoying, because often I'm selecting the service in the first place based on location and address allocation. However, I'm not inclined to make a big deal out of it since I accept some instability, unreliability, risk and uncertainty with the low cost I'm using paying.

It doesn't happen often, and seems to be more likely with new providers who are moving from some rented space to their own purchased gear and allocated address space.

    • FYI as part of another discussion I opened, I asked the same question and had a more in depth poll: Vapornode Vaporizes Phoenix

    • Poll not found...what a surprise.

About time to get this issue fixed..

    • IP space migrations are fine, as long as there's sufficient notice. A good provider will have a transition period, where both IPs work, so that you can switch over DNS without downtime.

Location migrations are fine if they are optional. That definitely requires plenty of advance notice, though.

In both cases, I'd say that the advance notice should be at least 2 weeks. The IP transition period should really be at least 1 week.

Really depends on the circumstances I suppose, I can say as a host who has done it recently, it gives me a pit in my stomach and if it was ever avoidable I would avoid doing it and the decision to do anything like this is not taken lightly.

less than 24 hours notice though, that's just stupid, in my case it was due to taking over another host, it simply was not possible to keep the current servers or IP's but I made sure the IP's were usable in both locations for a week regardless.

Interesting fact though, despite sending notice and reminders, still only around 30% of people have switched to the new IP's with less than 24 hours before the old ones stop working.
