WTB high performance storage-VPS [100+GB]. (West / Central NA)

Hello,

Looking for some price-quotes from providers, and to see what can be done here in this price range.

--In jist, I currently have a Vultr 250GB SATA Storage VPS: The purpose of the VPS is owncloud.

Unfortunately, owncloud's performance for gallery viewing and construction of gallery thumbnails is pretty much unacceptable (with just one owncloud user active). It's slow, and I mean SLOW.

The Vultr storage-node frequently has 30%+ iowait when idle, 90%+ constantly before I opened a ticket and reported a problem / got some node abuse suspended in the process.. Prior to complaints it was taking over 5-minutes to issue say 'update-grub' even, 10+ minutes to install a kernel, or over an hour to install updates to a clean Linux install.

[This is not to knock Vultr, I understand that storage servers are more for long term remote backups, not something like owncloud -- thus I'm looking for a more appropriate server]

Bottom Line: I want to get away from the slow IO. I want a server that owncloud is usable on (especially for image viewing).

--I'm looking for a provider that can get me some reasonable level of IO performance where I'm not waiting a second per gallery thumbnail (having already been pre-computed, mind you) ... and one who will permit CPU usage in occasional bursts for gallery thumbnail generation (this is pretty well a one time thing as bulks of images are stored on the server).

So, without further delay... Looking for something like this:

  • A provider who's been in operation for 4+ years. (Just looking for a sustainable business model here, not necessarily cheap)

  • RAID10

  • ~100+ GB of storage (preferably SSD -- hoping for more than 100GB, but let me know what's realistic price wise please)

  • 1 vCPU core (@2+ghz) -- but importantly it has to be able to be saturated for a few hours while I setup in uploading images ... and it will have to have saturation bursts thereafter (albeit much shorter periods).

  • KVM (w/ the ability to load a 32bit Linux image, so that I can rsync my other server over)

  • 1+GB RAM (I want some minimal space for disk caching)

  • 500+GB bandwidth quota (1+TB hopefully)

  • West Coast or Central NA. (Dallas preferred -- but I could be talked into PHX, LA, NV, Denver, or even Canada for instance here)

  • A dedicated IP. (IPv4 "NAT" is A-OK, as long as I can be given an IPv6 address too)

I could be talked into HDD RAID10 with the promise that node occupancy is either low or that abuse won't be tolerated. It just has to be responsive, so I'd really really prefer SSD.

*Asking price is ~10-13$ a month. (would be willing to pay yearly, with the agreement of a month to try service)

=> In my quick looking around, this seems to be a ballpark fair-price. However, of course I won't complain about lower (heh), or for more storage, ram, etc.

What are my options for something like this?
Thanks!

    How about a slice? :)

I can give you a bit of extra space on the $15/month. I could put you at 120GB within the same price at https://buyvm.net/kvm-dedicated-server-slices

Incero's SpeedyKVM SSD PLAN 2 (2GB RAM, 100GB SSD) in Dallas is $6/m (with LET code) when paid annually.

  • You could check out our storage VPS in Tampa https://vapornode.com/storage-vps Use code 15OFF for a recurring discount.

If you want to ensure owncloud works for you here (it should), we can give you a refund if it doesn't.

  • Impactvps. Their KVM storage plan really works well. Might not be 4 years with this brand, but @Awmusic12635 is been around for longer with his other brands.

This is awesome, I'm not quite sure how I missed these guys (literally never came across their site in browsing LET, LEB, WHT, somehow). Exactly the location that I'm looking for, and way higher node specs than I would've expected at that price w/ SSD RAID10.

    Thanks for this!

That dedicated CPU core / slice is damn sexy, so is that RAM. A bit overkill for the application, I think -- This isn't a service that we're partitioning off to other people (for personal use).

Definitely will consider riding a stallion (and those nodes really do befit your CP name), but maybe not for this application.

ImpactVPS is one that I came across in my quick browsing / shopping. The VDR packages are close to what I want in capacity (half way there on VDR4), not sure I trust going on a storage plan, but I'm quite weary of HDD storage due to the iowait's that I've seen with providers in the past (and especially of this Vultr package).

Storage space is always appealing, yet IO responsiveness for small image hits is a big concern for me (not just sustained sequential R/W).

Ah, didn't mean to put this in a second reply post. Responded out of order and forgot to reply to your offer.

-I am explicitly looking for a server fairly close to both Central / West US. Alot of our access to the owncloud server will be via 4G cellular, and I'm trying to keep page / hit-time low with the gallery.

Most of the current choke is disk IO, yet would still prefer to keep the latency low (<= 100ms) if possible too.

  • Hi,

Take a look at our most recent plans and KVM plans posted below.

More than happy to make adjustments for you.
