kidding aside, you need to disable firewall for testing then on back again, then create rules for the ports you need ... now, no hacking you promised.
doesn't most academic research use some *nix tool that manages it's own network stack for speed or something? why on earth would you use 2003 unless ..

Sorry you sound like you're trying to gather information to hack so sorry but I agree close your computer now before you get a visit from the feds(which don't like port scanning at all and you will likely end up in a place you don't want to be at lol).
