I just restarted one of the haproxy instances which was misbehaving. I think that was the source of the problem.

I thought that CloudFlare only protected layer4 attacks, not layer7?

I'm fairly certain they do, their platform is pretty sophisticated.

They do at a certain degree:
    https://www.cloudflare.com/ddos/#layer-7-attacks

  • Waiting for the day that all ISP's starting to block outgoing DDoS.

BTW, From what I've experienced so far is that CF does a pretty good job with L7 attacks.

Why don't we just leave it direct? I mean the CC website says that there's protection available in-house:

CF's L7 protection is iffy at best. The fact you can reflect floods through cloudflare to slap people silly is also pretty sad.

  • Real slow for me at the moment.

@SysAdmin: It seems as if "thanks" are no longer shown. Is that part of any mitigation tactic at the moment?

    It's showing for me.

  • I disabled it for like 5 minutes to try something

    Bad, bad boy.

Killing with Kindness : The Lethal DDOS edition.

Coming at a server near you. Rated R.

Hotter than a server room without HVAC. Spicier than sizzling fuses. More drama than a $3/yr VPS.

  • @SysAdmin Cluster working as it should?

  • No connection earlier in the day, but now LET is slow as molasses for me.

Why cc dont use their own ddos protection? Using cloudflare while they offer dfos protection seem not right.

I disabled the statistics hoping it would speed it up some. The stats plugin is wildly inaccurate anyway. No dice though.

We use a combination of many different tools and systems, including our own.

Still slow as hell, at least from up here in Norway.

  • tr1ckytr1cky Member

Yes, site is very slow. Since the site is slow since yesterday I assume it's not a constant DDoS but a configuration issue.

  • ricardoricardo Member

I'd look at your search function, particularly as it looks like it accepts wildcards. Seems like a slow/expensive part of the system.

They don't want to admit the fact that their DDoS protection is just as good as AthenaLayer.

I don't get why this attack can't be mitigated?

    OMG it's slow.

Some things are good when slow. For example:

Some things are not good when slow. For example, LET.

    Yes.

  • The "TempBan" plugin is causing the problems. I've gone and disabled it.

I'm probably going to be doing some more maintenance on the firewalls and what not. If you see something break, don't freak out.

Weird. It's a nice plugin but not worth any extra load.

  • Much better now!
