Self-Hosted Vid Streaming

in Help
Let's say I have an iPad and a VPS and I want to stream video to myself. MP4s, not sharing with the public, password-protected.
VLC + a web server ir is there something slicker?
Same Q for a home server & wifi if there is a better LAN solution.

Plex.
Is the iPad that you use on WC?
Plex hands down. I didn't get how good it was until I used it, now I wouldn't use anything else.
Plex or emby. I prefer Emby as plex wouldn't pick up all the album information for my music.
Plex is the way forward.
Not sure about your ipads crap and if they support that, but the most straightforward solution for normal computers as clients to a home server is just installing Samba on said server and setting up some shares with your video files.
If your iPad is jailbroken you could also just install Kodi and add a FTP share. Instructions for Kod (iOS): http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_for_iOS
Plex with there apple app does the job for me
+1 for Emby. Love it
Emby, definitely, for both solutions. Can also tie into Sonarr.
Younity
+1 for Plex.
Xbmc / Plex / emby
