Hardware for a Xeon E3 server.
Hello all !
It's been a long time since I wanted to have my own physical server. I finally have some spare money, but sadly I don't know the exact hardware I will need to build the server up, specially when it comes to motherboards, and the server's case itself.
I am thinking about building a server with the following specs :
Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 or E3-1270v2
32GB of RAM
256GB SSD
What case should I use for that hardware? Is there anything else I should purchase besides the case/cpu/ram/drive? Do you have any specific models in mind? I heard Supermicro and Dell cases are the best.
Also, what is the average price for a server with these specs?
Any help will be appreciated !

It would be for private use, but I would be splitting the server into 5 to 10 VPSses with Xen or KVM (That way I can use multiple OSes).
Concerning RAID, if I have 2x 128GB SSDs on RAID 1, I would only have 128GB usable space, right?
Correct
Correct!
Less than 128GB for usable space. And you should over provision for a variety of reasons.
If you only want two drives, get a SuperMicro 1U two bay chassis.
Since it's for private use, have you considered going with a Mini-ITX case?
Those server boards that can take Xeon E3s are large, will not fit in a Mini-ITX case.

It won't be able to handle 32GB, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyways
@MiguelQ interesting, haven't seen this board before. Still i am not touching any Intel server board soon since these suckers want to charge extra for IPMI
@Nick_Aa Will any SuperMicro 1U case work?
@MiguelQ That looks nice ! I will be considering it
I posted a decent set up in the Cest Pit. 4x3TB drives, LSI MegaRaid 9600 with BBU, Supemicro Board with ipmi, 32 GB Kingston RAM, Supermicro chassis with 4x3.5" hotswaps
How much do you think a Dell / Supermicro server with those specs (1230v2 / 2x128GB / 32GB RAM) cost in total?
It is Supermicro :P
How much did that cost?
$2.17K total
2.170 USD?
$2170USD
What processor do you have in that? Any thoughts on the price of a Supermicro or Dell w/ the following hardware : E3-1230v2 / 2x128GB / 32GB RAM ?
You're probably looking at something around $1500 for E3-1230v2, 2x128GB SSDs, and 32GB of RAM.
It's the 1230v1, but you could get that for much cheaper than my setup, since I added the raid card, and the drives.
@fizzyjoe908 Do you recommend Dell or Supermicro?
