I've had a bit of success with Project Wonderful.

Poot advertisements everywhere + advert popups + force advert clicks + BIG BIG donation by paypal thingy.
Make the web visitor can't leave without clicking at least 10 advertisements.
Use http://adf.ly/ to create infinite ad loops as well 4 more profit.
On a serious note, you could make your own content and then start adding adverts after gaining around 200 views daily.
Adbrite was good but it collapsed. (money in dat account all g0ne)
I would still say that google adsense is the best, in-case of any collapsing of companies.
@rahulks some sites make a good use from direct ads.
If you have many pages you go with some link trade platform.
And many other ways, but they all depend on what kind of site you have. AdSense is just on of the best generic ways.

@concerto49 Problem with them, is that you need to have a pretty big site to be able to get into the program.
